Askmen.com’s Top 99 Women – a Large Variety of Women to be Found There, Lets Look Closer at Them Now.

AskMen.Com’s Top 99 Women – 2008 contains a variety of women, from various professions, races and haircolors as well as eye colors.

Majority of women have brown eyes, and the dominant hair color this year amongst the top 99 women are blond or brown, as the most striking combination of hair and eye color is brown hair with brown eyes.

The top woman on the list of 99 most beautiful women in the world according to askmen.com, Katherine Heighl has blond hair with Brown eyes, and medium breasts size.

There is a slight overweight of brown haired women amongst the top 10 list of women, and the dominant color of the eyes amongst the top 10 are brown.

We want our readers to put the name no 100 on the list as well. Given that all these women were equal and trated as one of the 100 most beautiful women on the earth, which one would you like to add as your candidate no 100? Please write a comment to the article, with your proposal of candidate.

Remember one thing, these are famous persons, but you can add anyone to the list, the one you regard to be amongst the top 100 beauties in the world.

We have made some short statistics on this 99 most beautiful women list. The statistics can lie of course, and main source of error is hair color as many women of course color their hair, and therefore hide their natural color. Another source of error could be the breast size as some have natural, and others have transplants in them to make them bigger.

Of the list seen below we can see that around 64 percent of the women have brown eyes as the rest 36% has blue eyes. Any discoloring in shades of blue, grey, black, dark brown has not been taken into account.

38 percent of the women have blond or brown hair, and the rest 24 percent has black hair.br>

What is interesting is to see the combination of hair and eyes as well. We have found out that around 29 percent has brown hair and brown eyes. 24 percent has black hair combined with brown eyes. 21 percent has blond hair and blue eyes and 11 percent has blond hair with brown eyes. The rest of combinations states 9 percent brown hair with blue eyes and 6% with blond hair and blue eyes and finally 4 percent with black hair and blue eyes.

You can yourself do the statistics on the breast size and whether there is a combination of hair color, breast size or eye color and breast size that strikes out.

A Garth Brooks Bio

Garth Brooks announced his high energy rock-style country music with an evil smile and the phrase “welcome to the nineties”. He entered the workforce with a degree in advertising and enhanced his natural talents as a singer with a knack for self promotion.

Promotion and presentation were what Garth Brooks was good at, and although there were many country artists who made a more lasting musical contribution, Brooks raised the awareness of country music in audiences around the world, and in the process became one of the most successful country stars ever.

Garth Brooks was born and raised in Oklahoma and, although his mother was a moderately successful country singer, he concentrated his energies on his interest in athletics. He began his career as a singer in local bars in the early eighties and in 1987 he moved to Nashville with his wife to follow his love of music.

By the end of the nineteen-eighties the presentation of music had come through many changes. Thirty years previously there had been two kinds of music – rock and roll and the other kind – but when Garth Brooks began his career he had several sub-genres of country music to choose from as well as the introspective songs of artists like Kris Kristofferson and John Denver.

Rock and roll and country music had always influenced each other but Garth Brooks drew on the crowd-pleasing elements of seventies glam rock to present a whole new kind of country music. If there was any resistance amongst traditional country music fans to the guitar-smashing, fireworks-exploding concerts of Garth Brooks, they were silences by the roar of world-wide approval from rock fans who discovered a new interest in rock and roll.

Garth Brooks’ high energy concert style was largely inspired by the way champion rodeo rider and country music singer, Chris LeDoux interacted with his audiences. Garth opened for Chris LeDoux with conventional sounding country music and Ledoux blew the audiences away with his loud, bucking bronco style concert presentation. Brooks remembered Chris LeDoux in his first hit, “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)” which led to Ledoux reaching a much wider audience of country music fans.

Garth Brooks will always be remembered as the artist who combined country with Kiss and who sold a bunch of albums through a deal with Walmart. Thanks to his flair for promotion other country singers found a way to get there music listened to in the nineties and beyond.

The Many Styles Of Belt Vacuums

The belts for vacuum cleaners can come in many styles and hundreds of different sizes. Normally, vacuums use a belt to drive an agitation device, which is also known as a brush roller. With very few exceptions, most vacuums will use either a flat belt, round belt, or a geared style belt.

The type of belt that your vacuum uses is very important, not only for durability, but performance as well. The condition and type of belt your vacuum uses will have a lot of impact on the systems ability to clean carpet. The proper use of agitation is almost 70% of the cleaning ability of a vacuum cleaner.

Suction is also very important. The suction is what pulls the dirt that is removed from the carpet into the collection area of the vacuum. The suction, or airflow, is the key when cleaning hard surfaces or when using attachments. Without suction, a vacuum cleaner could only bring more dirt to the surface of carpet. Even though both agitation and suction are important with vacuuming, the agitation is what actually cleans them.

Almost all manufacturers use brush rollers that are made of wood, metal, or even plastic that is driven by a suction or brush motor through the use of three different kinds of belts – round, geared, or flat.

The round belts are the earliest type as they were easy to produce and easy to engineer. The round style, unfortunately, is normally run in the same space as vacuumed dirt. What this means, is that almost all of the dirt, staples, and hair you vacuum up will pass around the belt; cutting, nicking, or even scratching it along the way.

Vacuum cleaner belts have to stretch quite a long way, placing even more stress on the roller and the motor bearings. The round belt is still common, and used even today.

The flat style of belts are most often run in a circular fashion as well, unlike the twisted route the round belt takes to deliver the performance in the proper direction.

The style allow manufacturers to run the belt off of one side of the brush roller, instead of the center where all of the dirt is. This is truly a great innovation, as you can eliminate premature failure due to the soil and dirt in the belt path.

The latest belt design is considered to be the best in the industry. Even though there are many variations out there, the geared belt is the most efficient means to drive a brush. The geared belt is also known as a positive brush system because the energy of the brush motor is transmitted directly to the brush.

Both the brush and the motor are locked by fixed teeth to each other through a cogged belt without tension. The resulting direct connection results in higher cleaning efficiency because the brush can be driven at a faster speed regardless of the age of the belt.

The flat style can stretch as they become warm, which will cause them to lose tension. When you use your vacuum, the belt is always going to stretch. Believe it or not, it will lose it’s tension the moment you put it up to rest in the closet.

There is however, one real drawback to geared belts – the cost of the vacuum. Geared belts are normally used on two motor vacuums. Not only does this require a separate suction and brush motor, but it also requires electronic sensory systems to tell you when something is wrong with the brush.

Where there is muck there is brass

Spoken by Yorkshiremen working in scrap metal, today the saying holds true even more as perfectly usable items are disposed of without much thought to how they could be of use to another person or recycled.

Before the housing market crashed, many wealthy people would buy houses in excess of £1M and simply rip out the guts. Skips were parked in drives or lined avenues as perfectly good kitchens with marble work surfaces were ripped out and tossed away simply so the new owner could leave their indelible mark on the house. Granite work tops replaced marble work tops and nearly new fridges were replaced by brand new fridges. The level of waste thanks to the housing boom and its contribution to the destruction of the planet was a disgrace.

The truly wealthy are still profligate with possessions because they can be and very few wealthy people change a single habit to help preserve the planet.

Often, parked in their drives are large cars which may be hybrids but the manufacture of the cars uses up many more natural resources than is balanced by the saving of the planet through reduced petrol consumption. Flying seems to be a major part of being rich and flying in private jets is the vehicle of choice for many rich people who are still completely unaffected and unmoved by the woes that beset the planet through global warming.

Waste recycling is not a waste of time or resources. Of course it is in its infancy just like a hundred years ago air travel was in its infancy, but, having said that, waste recycling is not the cure for our wicked ways. Waste recycling is great for a start but the easiest way to reduce waste is to stop wasting. There is a chance as the global economy freezes that the planet will get a breather from waste and pollution and start to recover.

This writer is not telling us to go back to the dark ages just asking for a simple compromise. I am writing this article on a laptop thats five years old. In my pocket is a mobile phone and in my drawer are three old mobile phones. I will give my old phones to companies that specialise in renovating old mobiles and selling them on to developing countries instead of throwing them away.

Outside my house is a car but it is an old car that has done over 100,000 miles. I am not going to scrap the car simply to get £2k from the government. The cost to the environment of manufacturing a new car for me to drive is not worth the #2k.

Please do not throw your hands up and think that I am a typical green who is happy to wear a hair shirt. I am green in spirit but I am also practical and I know that for people to change lifelong habits there have to be serious incentives and also a few penalties.

We as the human race really can help ourselves live well and restore the world. We cannot prevent earthquakes or volcanoes erupting but we can prevent mountains sliding into the sea because all the trees have been chopped down. We can prevent soil erosion and the expansion of deserts because all the trees have been chopped down. And we can prevent the increase in CO2 because we chopped down all the trees.

The pressure from over population is the catalyst behind all the world’s pollution problems and no amount of waste recycling can stop people multiplying. But, global population predictions can be wrong. The truth is that unless you like living surrounded by mountains of waste and rubbish, waste recycling is going to be one of the great growth industries in the 21st century. It is time to embrace waste as an issue.

Is it really too much to ask that we all turn off our TVs, DVD players, digital boxes at the mains each night? Its not too much to ask that we turn off our computers each night? Its not too much to ask that where energy saving light bulbs are fitted? Is it too much to ask that you recycle your mobile phone, your old computer and monitor, and all the other so called rubbish that you no longer want?

Is waste recycling too much to ask?

Trip to shivalik hills of uttarakhand-India-asia

ALL ABOUT UTTARAKHAND.. It comprises the Shivalik range of hills adjacent to China and Nepal in the north and the foothills adjacent to Uttar Pradesh in the south.
Uttaranchal is the natural habitat of more than 4000 species of flowering plants and over 300 varieties of birds, many of which fall in the category of ‘endangered species’ today, because of hunting and increase in the traffic of trekkers and tourists.

MONAL PHEASANT (Lophophorus Imepijanus) is one such rare bird. About 12 to 1 12 ft.  tall, it has the body and head covered with lustrous peacock-blue fir, a canary-yellow feathered short tail and a peacock like crown, which give it a majestic appearance. Its natural habitat is at altitudes of 8,000-15,000 feet where it prefers to live inside bamboo and tiger-grass bushes instead of nesting. It lays eggs twice a year in snow, which hatch after 30 days. The Government of India imposed a ban on its hunting way back in 1972, but with little success.

Likewise, BRAHMAKAMAL, meaning Divine Lotus (Saussurea Obvalata) is a sacred flower growing above 10,000 feet, unlike Lotus, among hard rocks instead of ponds. It has large ethereal translucent white petals, shaped somewhat like a tulip, over a bright green stem. Local people, besides offering to deities, also use it to treat open wounds and bone fractures.

Conservation Efforts
The State Government of Uttaranchal has adopted MONAL as the ‘Bird of the State’ and BRAHMAKAMAL as the ‘Flower of the State’. Sanctuaries have been planned between the Tunganath Temple (12,000 ft) – Chandrasila (13,000 ft) region and the Mandal (5,000 ft) – Kharak (15,700 ft.) region for conserving MONAL.For the BRAHMAKAMAL, in addition to the ‘Valley of Flowers’ (12,000 ft.) which is its natural habitat today, efforts are planned to cultivate this rare flower in ‘Reserves’of selected vast meadows at altitudes of 2,000 – 6000 ft in Uttaranchal.

HRE Wheels Highlights Private Label Program on Record-Setting Devon GTX Supercar at SEMA Show

VISTA, CA–(Marketwire – November 3, 2009) – HRE Performance Wheels (www.hrewheels.com), a leading American designer and manufacturer of high-quality forged aluminum custom wheels for more than 30 years, is displaying the record-setting Devon GTX supercar at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The GTX recently broke the all-time production car lap record at famed Laguna Seca Raceway on wheels manufactured by HRE, and exemplifies HRE’s world-class private label wheel capabilities. Additional news from HRE comes in the premiere of one of the first Porsche Panamera sedans to reach US soil, equipped with new-for-2010 forged Monoblok™ wheels in 21-inch diameters, plus the debut of HRE’s most aggressively priced 3-piece forged wheel line for muscle cars and entry level sports cars, the new 560 Series. These vehicle and wheel displays are being unveiled today at the SEMA Show, the premier automotive specialty products trade event in the world, held at Las Vegas Convention Center. HRE’s booth is in the Lower South Hall, booth # 41019.

HRE’s growing private label wheel program provides all-inclusive capability to design, develop, prototype, and produce wheels in forged aluminum and other exotic materials. HRE can work with pre-existing designs or provide new custom solutions. Comprehensive in-house development expertise allows for small to large project flexibility, and low build-to-order volumes, while maintaining the capacity for large production runs.

“The Devon GTX is an exciting example of HRE’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities,” said Alan Peltier, President of HRE Performance Wheels. “We’ve got decades of experience creating the highest quality wheel solutions for private label customers who not only push the performance envelope, they also look for the highest levels of quality assurance, collaboration and support to grow their businesses. We put the same attention to detail and quality into the private label program as we do for our own HRE brand wheels, so fulfilling these high level demands is part of our everyday business.”

“We set out to become the ultimate custom wheel solutions partner for high caliber vehicle builders and innovators, and we’re fulfilling that objective,” continues Peltier. “Take a look at the forged wheels on the Hurst ‘SEMA Scholarship’ Camaro in the Grand Hall here at SEMA; they’ve got a complicated 3-step finish and a very unique design. Those were also created within our private label wheel program. If you’re a racing fan, watch Fall-line Motorsport in GrandAm, and you’ll see a custom Monoblok MR-3 wheel which Fall-Line drove to the first top-10 finish in North American pro racing for the new BMW M3; yet another private label example. HRE follows a consistent path of working with performance and innovation leaders like us, it’s a natural fit.”

HRE’s branded and private label wheels are tested to exceed US, Japanese and German government regulations for radial and rotary fatigue, impact tests, and the manufacturing facility ensures quality assurance through it’s achievement of German/EU TUV verification status. Each wheel HRE creates undergoes intensive Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to achieve optimal reductions in unsprung mass and rotational inertia as well as maximum strength and stiffness, resulting in enhanced ride quality, improved braking, acceleration and suspension performance.

The new Monoblok™ wheel premier for Porsche Panamera sedans include three styles in 21-inch diameters with sport-oriented styling, each engineered to achieve lower wheel weights versus factory equipment for enhanced ride quality and performance. These wheels feature the same 6061-T6 forged aluminum construction as the speed record-setting wheels on the Devon supercar.

“HRE has equipped Porsche street and track drivers with custom wheel fitments for years and we share Porsche’s passion for design and performance, so it was simply a must for us to design wheels to fit the new Panamera,” said Peltier.

21-inch Monoblok wheels are engineered specifically for higher load ratings and performance levels of the Panamera, and are additionally available in fitments for the Mercedes S65 and other flagship performance sedans. For performance SUV’s such as the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X6, even higher load rated versions are available. All Monoblok wheels are hub-centric, fully compatible with original equipment hardware, tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) and center caps, and no spacers are ever required because all HRE wheel fitments are application-specific with offsets calculated and accurately machined to the millimeter.

HRE has also introduced a feature-rich, value-priced 3-piece forged wheel line, the 560 Series. Targeted at muscle cars such as the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, and entry-level sports coupes and sedans such as the Audi A4 and S4, BMW 3-Series and M3, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Lexus IS, Nissan 370Z, Porsche Cayman and others, the 560 line puts high quality forged HRE wheels within affordable reach of a much larger group of consumers. The first set of 560 Series wheels will be unveiled in the Hyundai booth at the SEMA Show on Tuesday, October 3rd, on drifting and Pike’s Peak Hill Climb Champion Rhys Millen’s custom mid-engine V8 Genesis Coupe.

Priced a few hundred dollars per wheel below HRE’s popular Monoblok line, the list of 560 Series features rivals top-line multi-piece wheels. Each of the 4 models in the 560 Series features lightweight 6061-T6 forged centers and spun rims, application-specific 3-piece fitments, reduced unsprung mass, custom widths and offsets, hidden hardware, forged 6061-T6 aluminum and plentiful finish options. Additionally, each 560 Series model is available in the customer’s choice of 2 rim profiles, “R” (straight-lip) or “C” (stepped-lip), to suit each customer’s style preferences. 560 Series wheels come in a choice of 18″, 19″ or 20″ diameters with custom widths and offsets to accommodate any tire set, aftermarket brake package and even heavily modified fenders.

“HRE’s new 560 Series simply resets the bar for value priced 3-piece wheels. Now you can get HRE quality and customer service at a price previously unheard of in the 3-piece market,” said Peltier.

About HRE Performance Wheels

HRE Performance Wheels manufactures forged 1-piece and multi-piece wheels from aluminum alloy and exotic materials for luxury and performance cars and SUV’s in their San Diego, California-based, TÜV-approved facility. HRE’s state-of-the-art design, engineering, manufacturing and finishing processes present the ultimate customizing solution. HRE wheels are sold through select high-end car dealerships, specialty retailers and performance companies worldwide. For more information, visit ww

Peak Flow Meter 101

What is a peak flow meter

A peak flow meter is a device that measures the speed of air blowing out of your lungs after a deep inhalation. In other words, it measures your ability to push air out of your lungs. It is for the monitoring, management and control of asthma or other respitory conditions. It takes measurements of peak expiratory flow rate (PEF or PEFR) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1).

How does a peak flow meter work?

Peak flow meters can be categorized as mechanical and electronic. Most of peak flow meters are mechanical ones while electronic peak flow meters are now emerging into the market.

The essential part of a peak flow meter is its transduction system which transfers the input that a patient produces (the air one pushes out of the lungs) into a signal which can be measured. There are five most commonly used transduction systems: variable-orifice, fixed-orifice or venturi, stator/rotor, pneumotachographs and ultrasonic [1]. Mechanical peak flow meters are designed under different principles while most electronic peak flow meters are designed as a stator/rotor system.

How does an electronic (digital) peak flow meter work?

A digital peak flow meter, such as the Microlife Electronic Peak Flow Monitor Model PF-100, normally “incorporates a removable micro medical digital volume transducer which consists of an acrylic tube with a freely rotating vane supported on jeweled bearings positioned between a fixed swirl plate and a cross bar. As air is passed through the transducer, a vortex is created by the swirl plate, which causes the low inertia vane to rotate. The rotation of the vane is detected by the interruption of an infrared beam which produces an electrical pulse train at the output of a phototransistor. The number of rotations is proportional to the volume of air passed through the turbine, and the rate of rotation is proportional to the flow rate. With flow rate and correspondent time, FEV1 can be calculated.”[2] Ferraris 345010 Piko-1 Electronic Peak Flow Meter is similar as Microlife PFM, but comes with a much smaller size. Piko-1 PFM is a truly pocket-size portable meter.

How do I use peak flow meter?

A peak flow meter is normally used as an important part of an individual’s asthma management plan to demonstrate when to adjust daily medication intake. There is no standard reading for every individual, though a reference can be found based on the user’s age, sex and weight. [3] Normally, an individual should do the following to complete a test:

  1. Stand or Sit straight.
  2. Take a deep breath.
  3. Cover your mouthpiece tightly with your lips.
  4. Blow as hard and as fast as you can to get the reading. Be careful to avoid spitting into the mask.
  5. It is recommended to perform this three times in a row for an accurate measurement.

What do the readings mean?

Measurements with a peak flow meter can assist you and your doctor to monitor your asthma or respiratory condition. These measurements are important to record and analyze your breathing abilities over time so that your doctor can prescribe the correct medicine to keep your asthma in control.

First, you need to find out what is your optimal reading based on your age, sex and weight. Although reference readings can be found, your optimal PEF is the essential index for your future asthma management. This reading is normally taken when your asthma is well controlled. Your management plan will be based on this number and you doctor will recommend a medication to take when your asthma worsens.

If there is not much difference between your daily reading and the reference, your asthma is well controlled; you and your doctor may try to lower the level of your medicines. Otherwise, a peak flow meter may demonstrate that you may need to change the way you are using your medicines.

How do I use the readings to manage my asthma?

Your doctor may make a customized management plan for you and describe how to use the plan. Normally, a ‘traffic light system’ is adopted which uses green, yellow and red to indicate the severity of your asthma. When a reading falls in a zone with specific color, you need to take corresponding action. For example, when your reading falls into the red zone, you may have to follow your doctor’s recommendations for your worsening asthma, such as taking steroid tablets or seeking urgent medical attention.

If you use an old fashion peak flow meter, you need to record your daily readings in a chart. However, if you use a state-of-the-art digital peak flow meter, such as Microlife Peak Flow Meter, the device records your measurements into its embedded digital storage. Combined with the software package (sold separately), you and your doctor will be able to analyze and manage your readings easily on the computer.

Is This Uranium Bull Market For Real?

In light of Toshiba’s recent proposed acquisition of Westinghouse Electric from the government-owned British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL), historians may be reminded of former Westinghouse Chairman Robert Kirby’s litigious international outcry and prolonged battle over secretive and illegal price manipulation by a global uranium cartel. In the 1970s, Westinghouse, determined to capture the world market of building nuclear reactors, offered dirt-cheap nuclear fuel as part of its incentive to get sales from utility companies. The company’s 27 utility customers had locked in agreements with Westinghouse to provide them with 65 million pounds of U3O8 over the next twenty years, well into the 1990s. Those contracts set off one of the most curious legal battles of the 1970′s, ultimately reducing Westinghouse to a shell of the powerhouse it once was.

In recent weeks, Toshiba (London Stock Exchange: TOS; Tokyo Stock Exchange Ticker Code: 6502) has been strongly criticized for the Westinghouse acquisition, and may sell as much as 49 percent of the deal to two other Japanese firms and a smaller stake to an American firm. Toshiba’s CFO, Sadazumi Ryu said the company would pay for some of its acquisition costs within three years out of current cash flow plus float debt to about 115 percent of equity. Will Toshiba repeat the mistakes made by Westinghouse in the mid 1970s during the last uranium bull market?

Today, Toshiba aims its sights on the lucrative Chinese nuclear energy market, which on the surface appears more ambitious than the U.S. civilian nuclear program of the 1970′s. Toshiba wants to be a major beneficiary of China’s aggressive plans to expand the country’s nuclear energy program. And why not? Uranium prices have soared the past few years. Spot uranium rocketed in 2005 at an even faster degree than in 1975. That was the year when Westinghouse’s Robert Kirby was told by his doctor to not even bother giving up his chain-smoking habit. Things at Westinghouse had gotten that bad.

The head of the Pittsburgh-based conglomerate failed to grasp what was behind the escalating uranium price during the 1970s. His Westinghouse incentive plan sounded great when spot uranium sold for $6/pound. However, at $40/pound, Westinghouse got stuck with potential liabilities of more than $2 billion (1970s dollars) because of his offer to provide the utilities with cheap fuel. By July 1975, Kirby began blaming the world’s uranium cartel, which he believed manipulated the spot price higher to piggyback his company’s development plans. Across from Kirby’s offices in Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle were the offices of Gulf Oil, a uranium supplier, whom he believed to be a member of the uranium cartel. By September 1975, Westinghouse announced a shortfall of 25,000 metric tons of uranium, and claimed “commercial impracticability” in honoring its nuclear fuel commitments to the 27 utilities. And the lawsuits began.

According to a special report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Kirby’s “suspicions heightened when, in late 1976, he received copies of documents suggesting Gulf and 28 other suppliers had conspired to form a cartel to keep Westinghouse out of the uranium business.” The documents were the minutes of a private meeting of uranium suppliers held in Australia. In a bizarre twist of fate, the whistleblower came in the form of Friends of the Earth, which offered Westinghouse additional documents if the nuclear power plant manufacturer would help the environmental group release jailed members in the Philippines. Kirby ran with what he had, ignoring their request, and began a course of intense litigation. The lawsuits were eventually consolidated and heard in a federal district court in Virginia. During the course of the litigation, Westinghouse took its grievances to London’s House of Lords, setting international case law about the discovery process in litigations.

What really happened in the 1970′s?

Kirby and Westinghouse were caught up in an international trade dispute, during a world revival of the uranium market. Uranium prices had collapsed in December 1959 when the U.S. government placed an embargo on the purchase of foreign uranium for domestic purposes. The embargo came after the nuclear weapons build-up of the 1950s had peaked. In 1959 alone, the U.S. bought 20,000 metric tonnes of uranium for the country’s weapon procurement program, about 61 percent from Canada. Within a week after the embargo, global uranium prices fell by 75 percent. Twenty-four out of the 28 Canadian uranium producers and processors left the business.

Two Canadian crown corporations remained with viable uranium assets to mine and sell. Eldorado Mining and Refining Ltd had stakes in mines at Port Radium, Key Lake and Rabbit Lake. The provincially owned Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation owned had stakes in Key Lake, Cluff Lake and Down Lake. Before 1942, Eldorado Mining (later re-named El Dorado Nuclear Ltd) had been a privately owned radium company, which in that year was taken over by the Canadian government and made into a crown corporation. During World War II and for the next decade, the company’s raison d’etre was to produce uranium for the U.S. and U.K. nuclear weapons programs.

By 1956, both countries looked elsewhere for their uranium. By 1965, Canada’s production plummeted to 3,000 tonnes from a peak of 12, 000 tonnes annum in 1959. Canada’s uranium exploration came to a standstill, and only three mines remained operational. Boom town Elliot Lake became a ghost town. Lacking buyers, a self-serving Canadian Prime Minister Lester Pearson announced in 1965 that Canada’s exported uranium would only “be used for peaceful purposes only.” Nearly a year earlier, the U.S. government had banned the enrichment of foreign uranium for domestic use, pre-empting any newsworthy value to Pearson’s announcement.

Between 1964 and 1967, more than sixty nuclear reactors were ordered for the U.S. civilian nuclear energy program. Westinghouse’s newly designed light-water reactor created excitement within the industry. During that time, Canadian uranium exploration was taken out of mothballs and production resumed. Hardball shenanigans in Washington kept the uranium ban intact, and global uranium prices reached an all-time nadir of $4/pound. Canada was shut out of the U.S. nuclear fuel cycle market, and Ottawa was forced to stockpile a reported $100 million of uranium during the Nixon presidential administration. By late 1971, Prime Minister Trudeau’s cabinet had reached the end of their rope failing at every step to remove the ban by diplomatic means.

News reports suggest a number of uranium-heavy countries held an initial meeting in Paris in February 1972 to establish a uranium-producer’s alliance, in essence a de facto uranium cartel. Others suggest it was formed in April 1972, after the Canadian government reportedly gave its blessing. Canadian author Gordon Edwards (Canada’s Nuclear History) bluntly wrote, “The purpose of the cartel was to secretly manipulate world uranium prices using a phony bidding system. Hidden quotas were established by representatives from Canada, France, Australia, South Africa and Rio Tinto Zinc (London Stock Exchange: RIO).” Namibia and Niger were also included in the alliance, as was Gulf Oil, at least according to Robert Kirby of Westinghouse.

When the U.S. government re-affirmed its trade embargo in March of that year, a subsequent uranium cartel meeting took place in Johannesburg, South Africa in May 1972. At an Ottawa conference on May 28, 1972, it was reported that Jack Austin, then deputy minister of energy, voiced his concern the cartel could be considered illegal under Canadian law. Nonetheless, the politicians gave the uranium cartel a green light.

The alleged price manipulation was paying off. In 1973, the spot uranium price doubled. By 1976, it doubled again and stayed above $40/pound for nearly four years. It was around that time the alleged cartel disbanded to avoid international anti-trust laws, which Westinghouse was arguing after unleashing a tsunami of litigation. Westinghouse was desperate to escape its liability over the promise of cheap uranium to utilities. In March 1976, the U.S. Department of Justice began investigating possible infringements of U.S. anti-trust laws by the alliance of uranium producers. By mid 1977, a federal grand jury had been formed to pursue the investigations and possibly initiate criminal proceedings.

In a letter dated July 12, 1977, the U.S. Attorney-General wrote to the U.S. District Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, explaining the quandary this international episode had caused and discussed invoking immunity to obtain witnesses who would talk about the alleged conspiracy:

“These persons are not likely to come within the personal jurisdiction of the United States courts so long as the Department of Justice continues a sitting grand jury investigation of the international uranium industry; (3) These persons are British subjects and we have determined that it is highly unlikely that their testimony could be obtained through existing arrangements for law enforcement co-operation between the United States and the United Kingdom; (4) The Department of Justice has been largely unable to obtain information from these foreign persons about the subject matter of this investigation…”

By mid 1978, Westinghouse Electric’s complaint against Rio Tinto Zinc in the United Kingdom floundered in that country’s court system. Obtaining evidence in England was markedly different from the U.S. style of depositions.

Conclusion

During this litigious period, Westinghouse settled with several utilities, but continued to pursue the lawsuits. By 1979, Judge Merhige in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Richmond Division, ordered Westinghouse and the utilities to equitably resolve their differences. Westinghouse agreed to concessions that ultimately cost the company nearly $1 billion, but locked up the utilities as long-term customers by providing parts and engineering services for up to 25 years. In quiet out-of-court settlements, the uranium suppliers paid Westinghouse nearly $100 million and supplied the company with uranium.

Besides, there was another cartel in the 1970′s, which posed a far greater risk to the developed nations. From the oil embargo, which began 1973 and throughout the decade, the OPEC oil cartel overshadowed the tiny uranium cartel. Saudi King Faisal’s “oil sword” had a far greater impact on the energy climate, Gross Domestic Product, inflation and quality of lifestyles, than an anxious alliance of uranium producers trying to meet production costs and peddle stockpiled inventory at higher prices. Not only was the oil crisis a more serious affair, but another un-related episode tanked the price of uranium.

Just as the decade was coming to a close, on March 28, 1979, a water pump broke down at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, about ten miles southeast of the Pennsylvania state capital. It was an unexpected event, heightened Hollywood-style, as the accident coincided with the opening of a new movie called The China Syndrome, starring Jane Fonda, Michael Douglas and Jack Lemmon. In short order, many Americans were persuaded that events within the movie were somehow related to the Three Mile Island event. This was a Hollywood PR man’s dream. Fanning the media flames to capture a larger box office gross, a basically nothing episode (in terms of loss of human life, since no one died from the reactor accident) was transformed into an earth-shattering campaign against the entire nuclear energy industry. Ironically, more died in the movie (one, Jack Lemmon’s character) than as a direct result of the Three Mile Island accident (0 reportedly died).

Hysterical commentary from that era bespoke of a nuclear accident, which would melt down to the earth’s core, as one character in the movie suggested. Unable to distinguish what was movie fiction from scientific reality, the movie’s message left a horrifying memory in the collective minds of the general populace. A general panic followed, and nuclear energy was badly tainted by the accident. As the momentum for building U.S. nuclear power plants came to a grinding halt, overflowing inventories for the raw material to fuel those power plants had once again nullified the uranium exploration and mining sector. It took more than two decades to draw down those built-up uranium inventories, about as long as it has taken for the public to once again accept nuclear energy as a safer, cleaner alternative to fossil-fuel powered electricity.

Why is today’s uranium bull market different? Is the current and spectacular rise in spot uranium prices different today than it was in the early to mid 1970′s, when an alleged uranium cartel reportedly bid up prices to an artificial level? Is that same factor occurring during the current steep rise in the spot price of uranium? Will Toshiba sink into the same quicksand, during the balance of this decade, as Westinghouse Electric once did?

What To Expect On A Cruise

When most of us think of the words cruise ship, we envision the Love Boat or the Titanic. Well, not all the time, but often that’s the first thing that comes to mind. Actually, a cruise ship doesn’t have to be that big, and many countries have their own cruise ship lines. A cruise ship is also called a luxury ship, but that doesn’t mean that only rich people can sail on her. You may not find Gopher or Doc on board, but a cruise ship offers a unique way to travel at a slower pace so that you get to know your fellow passengers and are able to intermingle at various venues provided by cruise ship activity and entertainment directors. Airline or train travel doesn’t allow for such pleasures, nor does driving. For anyone who hasn’t been on a cruise ship, adventure awaits!

A cruise ship is also called a passenger ship and is used for those seeking a pleasure voyage to various destinations around the world, from Tahiti to Rio, to the Canary Islands and Hong Kong. Today, a cruise ship line offers the best in travel comforts and perks. With a cruise ship, the entertainment on board is as important as the ultimate destination, and most cruise ship lines will make sure to schedule exciting events that will entertain various age groups.

The very first cruise ship built expressly for the purpose of transporting vacationers from Point A to Point B was called the Prinzessin Victoria Luise. She was built in 1900. So began the age of transatlantic transportation that hit a rough spot after the sinking of the Titanic. Following that accident, Albert Ballin, the manager of Hamburg-America Line, made it a point to send his cruise ship captains across the North Atlantic is the worst winter weather to prove that the ill-fated sinking of the queen of all liners was not the norm, but rather an isolated incident. He succeeded, and other shipping lines followed his example.

A cruise ship is equipped to withstand bad weather and is capable of sailing great distances to exotic ports of call or down your country’s coastline. One of the most popular cruise ship destinations for world travelers is the Alaskan cruise, which offers delighted passengers sights and sounds that can’t be seen anywhere else.

There are many different kinds of cruise ship, and some are large, which others are only moderately so. Most come with affordable small to medium sized cabins, and a cruise ticket will generally include all the food and entertainment on board as well as tickets to events or locations listed on the ships port of call sightseeing lists. A cruise ship offers hotel style living, fine dining and even theatrical entertainment all in one place. Some cruise lines offer a cruise ship geared more toward the younger crowd, like Disney, while others offer nothing but exquisite elegance. Which cruise ship you choose will not only depend on your tastes, but your pocket book as well.
