Winter Fly Fishing Techniques!

Winter fly fishing techniques.  What?  Fly fishing in the winter?  Are you crazy?  Many fly fishing anglers put their gear away in the winter and resort to reading magazines, tying flies, or watching football.  But imagine, a nice quiet river, beautiful scenery, solitude, and often times, great fishing.  Getting out to your favorite trout stream or river in the winter can be very productive if you apply a few simple techniques and are willing to adjust to the climate.

How to stay warm.  Layers, layers, and more layers.  You will need to layer your clothing underneath your waders.  Wear 2 or 3 pairs of socks.  Usually, a pair of insulated or thermal underwear with blue jeans or fleece pants, under your waders will be enough to keep you warm under most circumstances.  Wear a loose fitting Tee Shirt under a long sleeved tee, and then a heavy sweatshirt or fleece with a good rain jacket over top will normally do the trick to keep your torso from freezing.  A warm hat and gloves are also a Must Have if you are going to venture out to the river during the winter.  A pair of hand warmers or a warm thermos full of coffee or hot chocolate stuffed in one of your vest pockets can also help take the chill off of cold fingers if your hands happen to get a little wet or cold from handling your Fly Line or landing a fish.

Make sure your boots and waders are water proof.  Leaky boots or waders are a recipe for disaster when wading in cold water.  Wear boots that are one or two sizes bigger than you would normally wear to allow room for the extra layer of socks.  The key is to make sure that none of your clothing or gear fits tight.  I find breathable waders to be more comfortable than neoprene and they do a surprisingly good job of keeping you warm.  I only use Neoprene Waders when the weather conditions are really cold and nasty.

Winter is the time to use subsurface flies.  Although, flies will hatch and trout will rise to them under the right conditions during the cold weather months, drifting nymphs under a Strike Indicator is the most dependable and productive winter fly fishing technique to use this time of the year.  Pheasant tails, golden Hares Ear, Stone Fly, midge, and prince nymphs are popular  patterns to use in the winter.  Downsizing your Fly Patterns is recommended.  Sizes 12 to 20 works best since like the fish, the bugs have a slow metabolism in winter also, and they haven’t grown to their full size yet.  Downsizing your leader and tippet is also recommended.  Many times the water will be more clear in the winter.  Dropping down a size or two will help prevent leary fish from being spooked.

As expected, trout are not as active, their metabolism is slower, and they can be somewhat lethargic during the winter.  With this in mind, look for the deeper, slower running pools out of the main current.  Look for deep, slow running pools close to the bank, or below riffles and rapids.  The trout will more than likely be holding tight to secure cover in these areas.  You will also need to get your flies down close to the bottom where the trout are holding since they will not be wanting to move too far to get their meal.  I would also recommend using a double rig.  Rig up two flies about 12 to 18 inches apart and set your strike indicator at a depth  where the flies will be close to or touching the bottom.  This will allow you to cover more water and give the fish more options.

Athough trout are not as active in the winter months, they still need to eat, and are usually more than eager to take an offering if it is presented correctly, even when it is cold out.  So, if you are willing to brave the elements, and give these winter fly fishing techniques a try, you will see that fly fishing in the winter is definitely a great way to relieve some of that cabin fever.  In fact, it can be a down right, exhilarating experience.

Greece The Wonderful World Of Caves

They are the abodes the gods coveted and stole from humans. The place where Zeus, Hermes and Pan were born and raised.

Once upon a time, there was man. He did not have houses like ours. He found shelter in the dark of world of caves. Caves inhabited by demons, dragons, elves and fairies, which according to some, still hole up in the remotest parts. They are endless. Even when you think that you have reached the end of your exploration, a new passage opens up, daring you to continue.

KATAFYGI, AGIOS DEMETRIOS, SELINITSA, MANI: THE CAVE TEMPLE

The fact that the cove’s entrance looks like ruins from on old temple and that human bones were found inside reinforces the belief that this grotto was a place of worship. The walls, the ceiling and the ground are adorned with complex clusters of stalactites and stalagmites. Its most characteristic “jewel” is a small disk dangling from a wall, 3m high. It is located in Messinian Mani, in the region of Agios Demetrios. It remains unexplaited.

ALISTRATIS CAVE, SERRES: THE CAVE OF PEACE

The cave’s name is derived from the fact that, a long time ago, wild doves built their nests around the opening of this small abyss. The cave is filled with white and red stalactites, creating a rarely seen, magical setting. Deep inside, there are many pillars, which give the impression that the grotto is divided into myriad chambers. Visitors have different names for the stalagmites, such as “Tower of Pisa”, “nuclear mushroom”, “granny”, “crib”, “cauliflower” … The cave is inhabited by an endemic animal known as Alistratia Peroni -Alistratia for its habitat and Peroni after the man who discovered it! The cave is located about 6 km from the village of Alistratis Serron, in the region of Petrotos.

GLYFADA OR VLlHADA DIROS: THE KING OF CAVES

In Diros, all cove myths become readily believable. “For years, fairies and sirens worked inside the cove. The former carried the decoration, while the latter song continuously, charming the fairies into making it more and more beautiful”, on old lady, from Laconian Mani, recites. “The chamber of miracles” continues to this day to offer a unique sight to visitors. The cove of Diros is considered one of the world’s most beautiful grottos of this kind, competing only with two others: the Jeita Grotto, near Beirut, and the Pariac Grotto, in Fronce. It is located deep in the boy of Diros, in Mani, on the west shores of the Laconian peninsula, in the district of Oitilas.

PERAMA, IOANNINA: THE CAVE OF THE CROSS

The unique, cross-shaped stalagmite, found inside the cave, is the reason why many believe that Perama is Greece’s “sacred” grotto. Even though no miracles have been reported so far, the cave is a wonder of nature.

It is one of the most beautiful grottos in the Balkans. The visitor has the impression of being in a three-storey palace made of stalactites and stalagmites. During the tour, one encounters many stairs and countless bridges. It is located at a distance of 2km from loannina, on the road to Metsovo, on the inner side of the Goritsa Hill.

SPELAIO DRAKOU (CAVE OF THE DRAGON) (KASTORIA): THE CAVE OF GOLD

A terrible dragan guarded the entrance to the Greot Cove of Kostorio, which, according to beliefs, was a real gold mine. No one, however, dared come close to this point for fear of the beast, which exhaled fire from its mouth, as well as poisonous vapours. But the first king of Kastoria, Castor, defiantly entered the cave, accompanied by men bearing torches. When the torches went out, a terrible voice filled the darkness:

“He who grabs a handful of mud from beneath his feet will regret it, but he who does not will also regret it.” The bolder among them took some mud and ran outside, only to discover that the mud they were holding was wet gold dust. In addition to its wonderful decoration, the cave features small lakes.

It is located on the Peninsula of Kastoria Lake, at a distance of 3km from the town.

SENTONI: THE CAVE OF THE NYMPHOLEPT

According to legend, many years ago, a young girl went into the cave to explore its mysteries. Fascinated by its beauty, she went deeper and deeper, until lost. Days passed and her parents looked for her in vain.

Eight days later, she was found dead deep inside the cave, with a sweet smile painted on her face. The villagers believed the girl was a nympholept (bewitched by nymphs). The myth is not far from reality. The 3,400-sq.m cave, filled with chambers with complex stone formations, huge pillars made of small stalagmites, and tall, white Doric-like columns, offers a unique experience to visitors. It is located exactly at the entrance of Zoniana Village, 53km from Rethymno, at the feet of Mount Psiloritis.

MARA, DRAMA: THE CAVE OF THE NYMPHS

Its charm is behind the legend that claims it is the abode of nymphs, these beautiful creatures that, sometimes, mated with humans. The cave is located about 20km outside of Drama, near the source of the river Mara. It is 3.000 m long and crosses through three artificially dug water canals. All through the tour, visitors walk either on the shallow bed of the subterranean river or on its sandy bank. It is located in Eastern Macedonia, in the district of Prossoutani, 25km northwest of the city of Drama.
