Recreational Fly Fishing

Fish eat bugs, plain and simple. So why not try to catch a fish by mimicking a bug? Thats what fly fishermen have been doing for centuries. Fly fishing began as a method to catch salmonids, which include mostly salmon and trout. Today fishermen use this method to attract a variety of fish ranging from carp to saltwater fish off the coast of Caribbean islands.

Fly fishing differs from traditional lure fishing in a couple of different ways. First of all, the fly fisherman has a longer, lighter rod and a heavier line. The fly fisherman will use his lines weight to cast his incredibly light weight bait: a hand Tied Fly, whereas lure fisherman will use the weight of their bait to cast their line.

The fly fisherman will aim to mimic a live bug by slapping their line against the water, causing a commotion on the top of the water and hopefully attracting fish to their realistically made flies. The flies come in a variety of colors and styles, ranging from felt and feather construction designs that look like frogs, minnows, and even shrimp. Additionally, flies come in two varieties: dry and wet. The Dry Fly, like it states, floats on top of the water and does not tip below the waters surface, while the Wet Fly will find itself submerged underwater thanks to the fishermens drastic cast.

Fly fishing is a genuine art. It takes time, practice, and skill to make the task look both doable and easy. A fly fisherman will start with his rod in front of him. He will hold a length of string in his free hand, and then swing the road behind him, directly to an angle behind his head. Then he will swing the rod forward to an approximate 45 degree angle, allowing the Free Line to move forward and slap against the water. As stated before, he hopes that this disturbance will mimic that of a bug on the waters surface and draw his food to his line.

Fly fishermen have a variety of methods and terms for casting. Different types of casts are used for different reasons. For example, a fly fisherman may want to use a false cast to draw a different kind of lazy fish to them.

The right kind of fly will also make a difference to a fisherman. Some fisherman scratch their creative itch by creating their own flies while others rely on the experts to tie them the best kind of fish, egg, worm, or mouse for their fly.

Regardless of how they cast or what they use for a fly or even where they fish, every fly fisherman will cite the incredible benefits of fly fishing with relaxation topping out the list.

How To Make That Long Airplane Journey Fly By

As an impatient, restless and easily-bored person, the idea of hours in a plane, car or train is not an attractive proposition. Planes are the worst for feeling restricted and confined, especially when you have long legs and aren’t lucky enough to get an aisle seat or additional leg-room. So, as you prepare for the long journey ahead, take a look at the following list and ensure you are well prepared.

Remember, once you are on that plane, there is no getting off to buy those things that you wish you had packed. Trains and cars offer a more flexible system, but you should still follow the same rules. You never know when you will get the chance to fill your bags with these life-saving items, so always prepare before you even start that journey.

The most uncomfortable part of the plane journey is not necessarily the plane or the journey. As Jean-Paul Sartre exclaimed in his play No Exit – “Hell is other people.” This famous phrase can often describe the feeling of annoyance as the noise, smell or constant nudging of your seat neighbour begins to irritate you to an almost psychopathic extent. There are many things that you can use to distract from this irritant, and you may need to use all of them.

The modern-day traveller has an endless amount of technology at their fingertips, and the aeroplane is the perfect place to take advantage of such great inventions. Mobile telephones are slowly becoming allowed some usage on planes, but until then, technology fans can make use of the other top inventions of the last century, the digital audio player and the handheld video game console.

The digital audio player or MP3 player offers a more convenient, streamlined and powerful version of the portable cassette player. Ten to twenty years ago, passengers would be carrying a brick-sized tape player, accompanied by a clutch of various cassettes with all their favourite tunes to keep them occupied and entertained. Today, the process is so much more simple.

A couple of weeks before your flight, download the songs that you want, put them onto your MP3 player and ensure that it is fully charged. Pack it in your hand luggage and prepare for a journey with the sound of decent music in your ears, rather than the horrendous screech of children or the monotonous drone of ‘that’ man that loves the sound of his own voice. If you don’t know who that person is, then it is probably you.

For those people old enough to remember Tetris, Sonic and Super-Mario, the next item will provoke nostalgia and emotional memories. As a child, journeys would fly by with the simple friendship of the handheld video game. There are so many of these to choose from, with simple often being the most effective. Hours will seem like minutes as you become so involved in the games, that when you close your eyes, the scenarios reappear in your mind and you continue playing them until you eventually fall asleep.

If technology is not your strong point, or your budget doesn’t stretch to these electronic saviours, there are cheaper alternatives that have been delaying boredom for hundreds of years. Magazines and newspapers can keep you interested for some time, with the additional bonus of a crossword or quiz to take up a few more precious minutes.

As a restless person, when taking magazines onto a plane, I often become annoyed with the magazine itself and regret wasting the money on purchasing it. You can buy a quiz-book or book of puzzles as these can help distract your mind for longer periods than celebrity-filled trash at three pound a go.

Facing hours on a plane and with early or late boarding times, a passenger may not have the opportunity to eat before their flight. Nearly all planes offer hot food when you travel now, but don’t expect a michelin-star meal or you may be terribly disappointed. Pack a few snacks and treats into your hand luggage, and enjoy the foods that you love without paying the sky-high prices on board.

Hand luggage is becoming increasingly important and the planning and preparation stage should be taken seriously. With more restrictions and rules in place, what you take on board will be closely monitored. Adhering to the rules, but packing important items that will help you enjoy your flight, will ensure that long-distance plane journey will fly by in the blink of an eye.

Fear of Flying – Part 1

Cheap flights offered by budget airlines have increased the amount of people choosing to fly dramatically. But many will find the experience of air travel far from pleasant. The fear of flying is a common phobia and anyone who suffers from it has probably been told, on more than one occasion, that air travel is one of the safest forms of transport. Statistically, air travel is one of the safest forms of travel, but for many, these statistics offer little comfort when they are experiencing turbulence at 30,000 feet!

Recent news headlines reported two commercial airline pilots who allegedly fell asleep during a flight. A concerned air traffic control managed to wake them when they noticed that they were not flying on their expected course. With stories like these, it’s not surprising that as many as one in five of us suffer some degree of fear when boarding a plane. Flying is something that removes you from your comfort zone. You are ushered into a tube loaded with flammable liquid that is then jet-propelled through the air at 600 miles per hour. This surely, should be enough to scare anyone!

Some are so consumed by fear that they avoid flying altogether. The retired Dutch professionally footballer Dennis Bergkamp hated flying so much that he was often unable to play for Arsenal outside of England. This gave rise to his nick-name the non-Flying Dutchman. This case in particular, goes to show just how debilitating a fear of this nature can be.

What many find unpleasant about flying is turbulence and it’s something that is commonly encountered especially during long-haul flights. It’s important to remember that turbulence is rarely dangerous. It may also help if you understand a bit more about it. Turbulence is caused by three types of weather conditions, the first being strong winds during take-off or landing. Pilots are trained to deal with these conditions. If winds are too strong then they will hold off until conditions improve.

Clean air turbulence, otherwise known as air pockets, is encountered around jet streams or near mountain ranges. They are caused when two bodies of air moving at different speeds meet. Unfortunately they are impossible detect with radar or the naked eye.

Storm clouds also cause turbulence. The centre of storm clouds can produce strong up and downdraughts. While these are not dangerous, pilots will try to avoid these to ease discomfort for passengers.

Fly Fishing – Taking Of The Small Mouth Bass

Both by tradition and practical experience, fly fishing for bass in streams is small-mouth fishing. This bass likes clear, cool water without too much weed growth in it and with sand or gravel bottom. Those conditions are more common in streams than in lakes, at least in lakes in the southern or central section of the Middle West. As we go farther north, especially in Canada, these small-mouth conditions become pretty usual in lakes. As we go south, they become more rare in any except mountain rivers. These conditions delineate almost exactly the places where small-mouth thrive.

River small-mouth are splendid fly rod fish. They take flies with a zest that is almost unequaled. They take almost any kind of a fly, too-bass bugs, Wet Flies, exact imitations of natural insects, and flies that do not resemble anything in nature. These latter highly colored fancy type flies, however, according to recent studies of light refraction, may actually be good imitations of the way a wounded small minnow or aquatic insect floating on top of the water looks to a fish. Anyhow, river small-mouth take them all-and how they fight!

River bass live in fairly shallow water and, therefore, take a surface fly especially well. Because fish in shallow water are more easily frightened, river bass are less frequently scared by flies than by the larger and heavier bait casting lures. I have often seen a river bass turn to a fly that lit behind him and take it avidly, while a plug, bait cast that near the fish, made him scurry for the nearest hiding place. That doesn’t mean bait casting isn’t useful in fishing for river small-mouth, but it does restrict its use.

The mood in which to approach stream fishing for bass is much like that needed for Trout Fishing. You are again stalking your fish. If you keep this in mind, it will bring many bass to your creel or stringer.

Most small-mouth rivers can be waded, which is ideal for fly fishing; there is even more need to wade properly, because most bass rivers are bigger than the average trout stream.

As with trout, by no means all of a bass stream holds bass. The fish have their feeding positions, and their resting or hiding places, just as trout do. In general, bass pick the same kind of water to feed and rest in as do trout, though small-mouth usually select spots nearer to heavier and faster current.

Whether the bass will be in the riffles or in the pools depends chiefly on water temperature, time of day, stage of water (whether high, normal or low), hatches on the water, and on weather and barometric conditions. So lunar feeding periods also have an effect, but, in my experience, are not as great a factor in stream conditions as in lakes. Where the bass will be and what they will be doing is entirely governed by the combined effect of these natural conditions.

The Perfect Silver Charm: Buy It Now

The charm bracelets have a rich historic origin. The ancient people believed that there are evil spirits around them who can do a lot of damage. To get rid of them, they used these bracelets as amulets. These charm bracelets were worn by both men and women and was one of the major area of concern even for the medieval knights. At the same time, they used to represent status symbol as well as the family line.

However, the superstitions have gone way. But the charm of these bracelets has not faded. In fact, they still fascinate women and the charm bracelets have become one of the major fashion accessories. Well, the typical charm bracelet has a number of loops and through these loops they are attached to the person. All the charms have their own family history and they are meant for specific reasons. Thus, these bracelets offer a good insight about the person who wore it.

These days, there are thousands of different types of charms available in the market. They have different features and at the same time, being delicate, they demand different types of maintenance. For example, there are the silver charms. If you have one of them, you have to wipe the dirt off with the soft cloth. Also, there are specially designed wipes for the sterling silver charms. These wipes will take the tarnish off.

Traditionally, the charm bracelet is linked with the chain. Now, the loops in the bracelets help them to get attached to the chain. From through this loop, different shapes sometimes in the shape of picture, figure, token, emblem etc. were hung. However, the concept of the jewellery hanging from the neck was in the trend even in the days of antiquity.

There are some brilliant features of the charm bracelets that make them separate from the typical jewelries. First of all, there are special designs of a charm that utilises the individual links that reveals the attraction of the face. This is fixed to work as a lick to the flexible bracelet. Here, the exclusive tokens are usually picked and the blank connexions are put back in position. There is another design that has become very popular these days. In this style, the curved bracelet and the token grip it tightly. As a result, they all move and spin around.

However, while possessing a charm bracelet, it is important to ensure that you are taking proper care for the bracelets. Well, that is not a very complicated process. In fact, they can be cleaned easily with soft cloth. You should now use the chemicals as they can do damage to your jewellery. Otherwise, you can clean them just like other gold jewelries. However, extra care should be taken for the hanging pieces.

The Birth of the Willow Tree Collection

I recall only too well my first introduction to the Willow Tree collection. I was visiting Enesco, our top supplier for gifts and collectables. Every year I pay them a visit early in the New Year to see what they have for us that is new and exciting. As distributors for Border Fine Arts, Lilliput Lane, Breed Apart, Franz Porcelain and many other successful collectable ranges, it’s important that I devote a solid couple of days perusing their amazing showrooms. Popping onto their stand at a trade fair is never enough.

So, it was January 200 and the Managing Director of Enesco, John Hammond asked me to come and see something new. He forewarned me, “You won’t have seen anything like these before. You probably won’t understand them, let alone like them, but we believe they have a chance of being the collectable phenomenon of the new century. What an odd build up to a new product launch. Not a conventional sales pitch. But then John Hammond isn’t a conventional man. More than anyone else in our industry, John has been responsible for revolutionising the collectables industry. It was he who realized and developed the use of polyresins in the manufacture of figurines. He understood that you can achieve incredible detail with resin that just isn’t possible using traditional ceramic materials.

John took me into a side room annexed to the main Enesco showroom. There, on a low table in a poorly lit corner of the room was a collection of figurines and angels, each about five or six inches in height. At first glance, they all looked the same, pale beige in colour and pretty non-descript in appearance.

My first reaction was along the lines of, “OK John. But why show these Willow Tree figurines to me now? They’re not finished. They haven’t been painted and they haven’t even got any faces yet.” “Ah,” he retorted, “they most certainly are finished and they’re not supposed to have faces. And I’ll tell you something else,” he continued, laughing. “You’ll buy them and your customers will collect them …. By the hundred” I found it hard to credit. Where was the appeal in these dull, anodyne figurines? Without facial features, they looked, at best, incomplete, at worst, positively spooky. Still, John is a good chap, and more importantly, a good judge, certainly a better one than me. So I did what I was told and placed an order, admittedly a small one. And so began, what for us has been arguably the biggest collectable phenomenon our industry has ever seen.

The first order arrived in February of that year. I remember the day well. I recall unpacking the delivery myself and gingerly putting these strange new Willow Tree figurines and angels out on display. The staff thought I’d gone crazy. “We’ll never sell these in a month of Sundays.” Deep down inside I shared their trepidation, but I put on a brave face. “Let’s be patient. You never know.” Within two days, I had placed our first repeat order and the rest is history.
