Hooks are hooks in most anglers’ minds. They figure they either need a big one or a small one, depending on the fish they are pursuing. Lots of anglers go through life completely missing the importance of using not only the right size sea hook, but probably most importantly the right type of sea hook.

It’s not just pure fishing luck that makes the difference in all sea anglers catching more than you. Most of the time it’s the hook choice you make on the day. A thick forged hook is not the right choice for small fish, fish with small mouths or soft lipped fish. A thin Aberdeen wire hook that can penetrate quickly in the inside of the mouth would be a better choice however you would also need a hook that holds its strength and shape.

Hook size is probably the first thing a sea angler should think of when buying hooks. Most are smart enough to know which hook is the right size for the fish they are after but it takes experience. Sizes from most manufacturers range from the very smallest freshwater trout hook at a number 32, to the very largest game fish hook at 19/0.

The size breakdown from smallest to largest looks like this:32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 11, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0, 5/0, 6/0, 7/0, 8/0, 9/0, 10/0, 11/0, 12/0, 13/0, 14/0, 15/0, 16/0, 17/0, 18/0, and 19/0.

In sea fishing in the UK, average range is from a Size 1 to a Size 10/0 been a boat hook. For example Mackerel fishing, you should be using a size 1/0 hook, for Pollack from the shore you could use a size 3/0 or 4/0 and also you can use this size for most bottom fishing needs. Flatfish you are better off using a size 1 or 1/0 due to their small mouths. Remember all of these hooks come in a short, regular, or long shank version. The shank of the hook is the part between the eye of the hook and the bend. For example long shanks are very well suited for Sandeel baits, Lug or Rag threaded up the shank for a more natural presentation.

Fish Hooks also come in several types. Knowing a few of the more popular ones and their uses can help you be successful:

O’SHAUGHNESSY
This hook is named for the specific design of the hook. It’s a standard hook, forged with a very strong bend. This hook is relatively thick, very strong, and not likely to bend out of shape. Generally designed for saltwater, it is good for general bottom fishing use. Sizes range from #3 to as large as 19/0.

ABERDEEN
They are generally made from shaped wire. Unlike the O’Shaughnessy, it can and does bend. It can be bent back into shape several times before it becomes too weak. However, once a fish is hook and the barb has completely penetrated, this hook holds very well. These hooks are modified with bends in their shanks for use in jig molds.

CIRCLE
Perhaps the best innovation in hooks to come along, circle hooks promote healthy catch and release. The design of the hook itself, when used properly, prevents fish from being hooked in the gut. Many sea anglers have a problem using these hooks because they require no hook set. If you do try to set the hook, it will generally come out of the mouth of the fish. These hooks are designed to move to the corner of the fish’s mouth and set themselves as the fish swims away from you. Anglers feel a bite and simply begin reeling, slowly at first, then faster as the hook gets set.

LIVE BAIT
These hooks generally have a shorter shank than other hooks. Whether that is to allow the live bait to swim more freely or to be less apparent to the fish is debatable. My vote is to allow the bait to swim more freely. These hooks come in regular and circle designs. Regular live bait hooks will be swallowed and result in gut hooks most of the time. Circle live bait hooks provide a greater chance for a good release.

 

BAITHOLDER Baitholder Hooks – These are very widely used by sea anglers. These are good hooks for worm bait they have a ringed eye and have 2 slices or barbs in the shank to assist with holding the bait up the shank of the hook.

KAHLE
The curve on these hooks makes them ideal for live bait. Made from the same wire as the Aberdeen hooks, they will bend if hung on the bottom of some structure. However, once a fish is hooked, the design of the hook prevents it from being straightened.
Hook Choice!

First, use common sense. As simple as that may sound, I can’t tell you the number of times I have seen people make some really bad hook choices. Match the hook size with the fish!
Second, use some trial and error and learn from your mistakes. No one became a good fisherman overnight. All of us had to learn either from someone else or by trial and error.
Thirdly, get a good brand of hook, such as Sakuma or Mustad. Try to avoid cheap hooks for the reason that they are just not up for the job, you don’t want to let that fish of a life time get away because of a crap hook bend out on you! If you are going to spend any money on Terminal tackle you hooks should be the number one first choice.

My personal favourites are Sakuma Singers and Mustad Worm hooks for flatfish and Mustad Aberdeen and Ultra Point Bass Hooks for Bottom Fishing for Huss off the rocks where a stronger hook is needed but a larger gape for bigger baits is required.

Finally, to all of you who are new to fishing, try taking these examples and build your learning experiences upon them. Trial and error are often the best teachers in any skill.

E-books and E-hooks: Using Your Social Links Profitably

      You might be wondering what I mean by e-hooks? Well it simply means getting hooked up socially on the internet via social sites like myspace.com and others. Now, you will also be at crossroads, the relationship between e-books ad e-hooks (a word I coined myself). From the title of the article, you don’t need a soothsayer or probably a wiseacre for you to know that this is an article filled with humor or maybe satire if you prefer that. But, on the contrary, the purpose of this article is not humor intended, but to show the distinction and interdependence of two factors as a product of success in all ramifications, especially as an infopreneur If you are new to terms like web 2.0 or social dating, then this might sound Greek to you; but if I am allowed to make use of my new term (e-hooks), in this order it will mean getting hooked up electronically (via the internet) as every new word in English these days are prefixed with an ‘e’ below are some examples; Book- e-book Mail- e-mail Money- e-money Currency- e-currency Gold- e-gold etc: and now enter the new kid on the block according to me HOOK- e-hook!!! Now to the concept of making e-book to suit e-hooks; social dating sites like hi5.com, facebook.com, and the most popular of them all, myspace.com: are social sites where you can get this idea into full swing; when you sign up for membership of these sites, you get to meet social friends daily.

      Like yesterday I met a very good friend on myspace.com, fortunately for me, we share so many thing in common; like she is a stickler for doing things right, she loves writing just like me, and the most amazing thing about this new friend is that she loves football passionately just like me. With such a friend, you develop a very good relationship through e-mail, chatting online and offline or even speaking on the telephone, amazing isn’t. As the relationship develops, trust also comes in. this is where you come in with your product, your e-book. On my previous write ups, I have never treated e-book as topic; however as at the time of going to press, my e-book is still in the burners; soon to be released, and if you stay (e) – hooked up on this site and other article boards I post my messages: you might get a free copy of it.

     Back to why I choose to put up an article about e-books when many articles about e-books have continuously been discussed on this site and many others. Well I did not just write in generic terms as is the case with this kind of article, but rather I decided to get a step further by introducing another dimension as regards this all important niche by exposing the social angle(e-hooks) relative to the business aspect of it (e-books).      Protracted interactions with your community help you identify the problem of each of them, and basically almost all of them have similar problems: problems like ‘how do I get my first check doing online biz?’ how do I get a cheap design and hosting service for my website?’ how do I break up, get a divorce and maintain my sanity?’ how do I become an internet guru?’ what are the best sites that discusses golf, football etc?’ ‘What is the meaning of RSS feeds how to get an RSS hosted on my site and what do I do with it? ‘Why should I write articles/e-books?’ The list is endless, and to these notable friends, these problems look colossal; but as a dependable friend they look up to you for help, as no better person to help them get their problems over than a social friend. Now the question is, ‘how do I help these friends?’ simply pick up a particular niche, study it, make researches, note your observations and demystify the problem.

     Next, gather all you have observed and noted down, compile them to look comprehensive and your e-book is ready. I don’t need to go into the specifics of getting an e-book ready for publication; however, if you need this info; hit any search engine yahoo, google, MSN etc, on the search template type ‘making e-books’ or any other search pattern related to your search. You will get loads of info on the subject matter; you can get a deluge of articles discussing this topic on this site or any other article board. Now, your e-book is ready for distribution, and to do this you don’t rush things. Remember, you’ve built a high level of trust between you and your social friends, and this is not the most suitable time to advertise your e-book for sale, so my best advice to you at this point is to do what I will do. Give your e-book away freely to them. Sounds incredible! Look let me tell you something- the psychology on the internet is that information is free, and most people love freebies, everybody! The Right Catfish Hooks to Increase Your Success

Knowing how to select the right catfish hooks for the type of catfish you want to catch is very important. Fishing for a 2lb channel is vastly different than fishing for a 50lb blue or flathead catfish. The sizes I use range from 2 to 2/0 in most waters but there are times when you can use larger hooks up to 6/0 effectively.

I usually fish with a 2/0 baitholder hook as I can get both table fare and some good sized cats without having to worry about the hook failing. When I am at a location, such as below a dam, that has proven to produce monster cats consistently I will use a 4/0 hook.

The way I select the right catfish hook is easy. In waters where I am unsure of what to use I always start with a 1/0 baitholder hook. If your drag is set properly this hook is sturdy enough to bring in the big catfish and small enough to provide good table fare.

When I am trying to make sure I have a decent catch to take home for dinner I often switch to a smaller hook. Not many catfish anglers recommend this but I have had great success doing so. For instance, if I am having a problem with the catfish taking my bait, running with it for a short distance and then just simply dropping the bait I will switch to a #2 baitholder. Of course it is not as effective for big fish but it does put food on the table.

When it comes to winter fishing for catfish, you really can get better results using smaller hooks too. Even when you are trying to catch big fish. Especially in the winter, when the water is cold and calm, the catfish tend to be finicky, and you have to try to get them out of the water without spooking them.

In the springtime, when the fish are not so finicky, you can move up to some bigger hooks like a 4/0 baitholder hook. These are particularly good when there are flood water kinds of conditions present. During flood conditions, the fish tend to get very aggressive, and they really grab on to basically whatever is out there. You will miss some fish you could catch if you use the smaller hooks in flood conditions.

No matter what size or type hook you prefer to use you should always have an assortment on hand so that you can adapt to the waters or conditions you are fishing in. Go often enough and you will work out your own system and preferences for choosing the right catfish hooks.
