Cesspools, Septic Tanks, Plumbers, and Plumbing History

You wake up one radiant Saturday morning, looking forward to doing some gardening around your magnificent new Pre-Revolutionary Colonial home in tony Westchester.

You throw open the bay windows, taking in the expanse of benevolent blue skies, your magnificent garden bursting with Daffodils and Tiger Lilies, the wild ducks luxuriating just beyond in the shimmering pond, beneath a ring of White Oaks and Sugar Maples.

You take in a deep breath of fresh air -

Then, you’re rolling on your Persian rug, gagging uncontrollably…

The aroma of your splendid natural setting hits you with all the power and putrescence of a toxic waste dump.

What’s the problem?

This is Westchester. Not some 4th-world village with shallow roadside trenches filled with human excreta.

Then, you remember, just before purchasing your dream house, a friend suggested to check the condition of the septic tank.

What Is It?

A typical septic tank has a volume of 750-1500 gallons, and may be made of concrete, steel, or fiberglass. They are watertight chambers that promote the growth of anaerobic bacteria for the biological decomposition of sewage, and the separation of grease and organic particles from the wastewater. Septic tanks are constructed with baffles or sanitary tees to prevent the flow-through of floating solids, and to minimize the possibility of the raw sewage from leaving the tank, and disturbing the settled sludge and floating scum.

A septic system combines a septic tank and a leaching system. The leaching system may include leach lines, leach beds, or seepage pits. Drywells are another term for seepage pits, with the distinction being that they typically handle no sewage and simply re-direct storm water into the ground. Sometimes the term “cesspool” is used, but it’s actually archaic. There are a few cesspools manufactured, but they don’t permit the flow-through of septic tanks, and are only used for temporary purposes.

In terms of modern plumbing, waste from your home enters and exits the top portion of the buried septic tank. In the interim, the bacteria in the tank’s liquid environment do their work by breaking down solids into a liquid called effluent. Effluent exits the tank, next enters the leaching system, before finally seeping back into the ground.

When You Need a Plumber

If you begin detecting unwelcome odors, find yourself sinking into soggy and lushly green areas in your lawn, or suddenly discover a fetid backup in your sink, shower, or bathtub, the chances are your septic tank’s leaching system has failed.

Septic tanks can suffer structural damage or deteriorate over time. Most problems are created by blockages in the plumbing or leaching systems, or the pipe running between your home and the tank. Minor obstructions can be solved with household plumbing equipment, but serious ones require a plumber.

Over time, tree roots can also enter the drainpipes choking off the refuse. Also, the soil surrounding the leaching system can become clogged, and when all the sludge and scum is not periodically removed from the tank, they’re transported out into the absorption field.

Benefits

Aside from unclogging pipes, repairing leaching systems, or replacing severely damaged septic tanks, an experienced plumber will know how to find your tank if you don’t even know where it is.

Your general contractor should have provided you with a plot plan, indicating the septic system’s whereabouts. But if you’ve somehow lost or misplaced the records, and can’t obtain them from your city or county’s heath department, a savvy plumber will zone in on your septic tank by probing the ground with a metal rod to locate the pipeline. Or, he’ll follow the pipeline from the house by listening to the noise a metal snake making final contact with the tank inlet. Water probes are another method he might utilize to locate a tank that’s gone M.I.A.

Risks

Don’t buy a septic tank that’s too small for your house. Larger units have many advantages including longer detention times, permit better separation, and less carry-over of scum and sludge. These factors prolong the life of the subsurface leach lines, leach beds, and seepage pits. Yes, larger tanks are more expensive, but require less frequent cleaning, and allow for future home expansion.

Cess Pool History 101

The Romans were innovators in sewage control, most notably with the cloaca maxima, circa 800 BC. These open drains carried away storm water, but designed in such a way that the rains also flushed away piles of excrement and household rubbish thrown into the streets. These Roman sewer geniuses also developed the cesspool, the forerunner of a modern-day septic tank. Sewage flowed into a large stone vat, where heavy solids settled to the bottom, and lighter particles floated to the top. The partially cleaned liquid was drained into a river or the sea. The collected sludge was then used as fertilizer or buried.

Texas Tech Head Coach Mike Leach Fired… Shocking details

In an event that has surprised followers of college football all over the country, (now former) Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach was fired on Monday. There is word that Leach had a lawsuit pending against the school in relation to his recent suspension, and he was fired shortly before appearing in court for a hearing on his suspension. Texas Tech holds strong that his firing was appropriate, and several players have agreed. Mike Leach does have his supporters though, including New England Patriot Wes Welker.

The firing stemmed from the alleged abuse of sophomore Adam James by the former Texas Tech coach. James says that Coach Mike Leach would confine him to small, dark spaces during practices as punishment. Many other players echoed resentment toward the coach, how there was “always a negative vibe”. In one alleged incident, Adam James was locked in a shed during practice. Contraversy erupted over another incident where Adam James was locked in an electrical closet after he had a concussion.

While many are on James’ side saying that Mike Leach was a terrible coach, supporters of Leach question James “work ethic”. As if poor work ethic is any excuse for locking somebody in a shed against their will. Especially in Texas, I could see how such a case could have come about, football players will do anything their coach says most of the time because there is supposed to be trust. Leach broke this trust and this resulted in abuse.

Do you think Mike Leach deserved to be fired? This is a hot button issue and we are trying to get your opinion. On one side, Leach has said that the school is lying, but refuses to say about what. Then there are all the players that claim he was a bad coach and indeed did treat James like that on more than one occasion. Vote right now and get a free NCAA jersey of your choice! Limited time offer, will be taken down very shortly.

Picking a Flying Club

Okay, so you’ve gone through training.  You’ve flown solo, you’ve done your cross country work, you’ve had hood training and night flight training and done over a hundred and twenty landings.  You’ve taken and passed your checkride, and your pilot’s license just showed up in your mailbox.  Congratulations!!!  Now what?  Well, it’s time to pick a flying club.

One of the most rewarding parts of being a pilot is by sharing your experiences and flight time with your friends.  Not everyone has the benefit of having friends who are pilots, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make some.  Joining a flying club can be the best way to experience the different aspects of aviation that you would normally miss by going on with things alone.  Aside from providing good friends and good company, a flying club can provide enthusiasm, confidence, and most importantly, ongoing flight education that reaches past your student flight training and into your future with aviation.  Fantastic websites such as Student Flying Club provide a list of hundreds of great flying clubs by US state, so go check out which ones are available in your neck of the woods!

Whether you’re going to fly professionally and continue to get ratings, or just use your pilot’s certificate for recreational purposes, joining a flying club is always the right move.  Many flying clubs require little more than a minimal annual dues, sometimes only as much as $40 or $50 a year.  Most flying clubs meet on a monthly or bi-monthly basis, where pilots can share their knowledge, keep each other up to date on the latest airport or FAA regulations, talk about weather conditions, and most of all plan to fly places together.  These types of clubs often arrange club fly-in’s to local restaurants at neighboring airports, and some plan even more ambitious cross country flights.  Many pilots love to fly with the benefit of a co-pilot, so you can easily jump into the right side seat for a quick trip or spin around the airport… making new friends in the process.  At a good flying club you’ll meet aircraft owners, aircraft renters, and even some non-pilots who joined the club just for the love of flying.  Together you can go and see places you wouldn’t normally have thought of without the benefit of meeting all these other people.

Choosing a flying club might be as simple as going down to your home airport and seeing that there’s only one available.  Sadly, rising fuel costs and reduction in disposable income has put a big dent in General Aviation as a whole.  Still, pilots who love to fly will always find a way… and these pilots generally stick together in their flying clubs and flight communities.  Find yourself a flying club that’s local, and that flies out of an airport you’ll be comfortable with.  Ask them where they meet, and when their next meeting is.  Most of these clubs will be thrilled to have you, and will invite you to sit in on a meeting or two so you can see how they operate.

Once you’re sitting in on a flying club meeting, make yourself known.  Stand up and introduce yourself, and talk about your piloting experience.  Ask questions.  Find out how often the flying club plans trips, and where they go, and what they do when they get there.  Most flying clubs will have a president, vice president, treasurer, and such.  Ask about dues and what it will be used for and how it will benefit the club as a whole.  Some flying clubs maintain video libraries for flight training purposes, and many have close relationships with an FBO or home air base.  Joining a club could get you special privileges at such an FBO.  Sometimes your dues can even grant you the benefit of reduced aircraft rental rates.  If you’re an aircraft owner, you’ll find pilots who will be willing to fly with you just for the joy of being in the skies.  Most of them will offer to split fuel costs, or grab the stick for the return trip.  And even if you don’t own an aircraft, a local flying club will put you in touch with people who do.  These members can become fast friends after just one or two trips or meetings.  Building relationships with other pilots will teach you much more than any book or video ever could, and flying with other flying club members is the best teacher there is.  Observe their flying techniques, seek out unknown airports, and if you’re a very experienced pilot, you can even share your own knowledge with others.

So take your time, check out your options, and pick a flying club that’s right for you.  If you have more than one choice, sit in on meetings for both.  Talk to everyone you can, and get a feel for how the flying club operates – and how their members operate – before deciding to commit to those monthly meetings.  But once you do, you’ll be happy to have other pilots around you with which to share your love of flying.

How many job losses did Motorola announce recently?

I only asked because they sent me a consent form to sign, the wording of which was unacceptable, I would like to take this opportunity to ask Telecom Industry representatives to implement my design on mass and every company, depending on its size, to chat to the Manchester branch of Nat West and deposit funds into my old account of between one and five million pounds (BT; twelve million pounds) Banks and the fools responsible for ‘chip and pin’ having to bring their ATMs into the twenty first century can talk to Telecom Industry representatives about getting the timing of the change over to be ’seamless’ and every Bank and major Building Society can deposit a one off token payment of four million pounds, with the exception of Nat West who, upon reinstating my account, can deposit three million pounds of their own shareholders money, at that point I can fly to America, lobby for sanctions against Israel, the withdrawal of troops, etc.

Email, click on ‘God’.

Oh yes, vote Labour.

The last time I read, they were cutting 3,500 jobs.

Wearing the Right Men’s Clothing and Women’s Clothing for Your Kind of Sports

Choosing the right men’s clothing and women’s clothing for your kind of sports should be based on a lot of considerations. Although looking good is primary on the list, other factors need to be looked at to come up with the best sporting apparel that will be suitable for you. Equally important is the comfort of the chosen men’s clothing or the women’s clothing. It will definitely affect your performance or workout when you wear uncomfortable clothing to the gym or wherever you do your sports. Most other sports will also dictate that the performance clothing you wear should give you ample protection. This could mean that your men’s clothing or women’s clothing provides some protection for your skin, your head, your eyes, your limbs, or just basically for the whole body. Not only will comfortable clothes that offer protection make you feel good about what you are doing despite all the sweat you have to pour out, wearing them will also mean additional enjoyment in whatever sporty or athletic activity you are constantly engaged in.

Appropriate clothes will depend on the kind of sports or athletic activity you are in. For shooting events particularly, one needs to wear something not only of celebrity fashion design to stay hip and cool, men’s clothing and women’s clothing appropriate for these events are focused on giving the wearer ultimate protection from bruises and scratches. For polo events, for example, you will need to wear men’s clothing or women’s clothing that will protect you from the harsh elements of the outdoors such as the sun, dust, and wind. And lastly, light events like fishing will definitely require a different set of men’s clothing or women’s clothing. Hats, warmers, and gloves are great add-ons to your fishing gear. Most of which should be durable enough to stand the regular wear and tear of ordinary miscellaneous accessories such as these.

All these clothing needs and a whole lot more are available at the latest online apparel shop which is none other than Triggonomics. Triggonomics is a street wear brand that boasts of men’s clothing and women’s clothing that depicts fight fashion combined with the latest in celebrity fashion. Quickbooks Shopping Cart

Your online business is doing much better than you ever dreamed. Orders are pouring in from everywhere and you’re finally out of the woods and into the new millennium; except that your shopping cart is speaking a different language from your accounting books. Redundant data entry is taking up too much of your valuable time. What if you could integrate your systems? Sure, it’s possible and it is easier than you think!

The solution is to use a Quickbooks integrated shopping cart.

Quickbooks shopping carts are among the most powerful and highly integrated shopping carts available in the market today. Quickbooks focused shopping cart solutions automate orders, item data, customers and payment. Thus they automatically synchronize items, orders, customers and payments between your storefront and your Quickbooks financials.

But, what if your shopping cart does not allow automatic integration?

Fortunately, Quickbooks allows you to import online transactions that were created in your shopping cart. A special file format called the IIF (Intuit Interchange Format) is produced by your shopping cart software and this can be integrated with your Quickbooks, without your having to re-key the information.

There are two kinds of shopping carts: shopping carts with built-in Quickbooks integration and shopping carts that need add-on software for Quickbooks integration.

Carts with built-in integration have buttons or links that enable you to generate files that can be put into Quickbooks, without the use of any additional software. A couple of mouse clicks and your online transactions are posted.

Using add-on software that bridges the gap between the shopping cart and Quickbooks is a complicated process. You will have to ensure that your add-on software is compatible both ways – with Quickbooks and your shopping cart program.

The most vital feature for integration, whether it is using in-built software or add-ons, is that the shopping cart should produce accurate and complete data. Quickbooks requires orders to be properly classified into the appropriate type of transaction. The items should match flawlessly for Quickbooks integration to work.

To make the entire process easy, you must choose a shopping cart software that allows easy, menu-driven installation, initialization and set-up of Quickbooks files. Your cart and/or add-on software should be able to handle large orders, if needed.

Quickbooks integration allows you to synch orders, items and customers easily. Since you don’t have to key-in entries, your inventory will always be accurate. Thus you can save precious time and energy – time that you should spend selling your products, instead of playing around with the numbers on your keyboard!

India is a country with maximum diversity in religion, region, race, languages and cultures. This fact is clearly manifested in the diverse art forms, paintings, architecture, folklores and folk dances.

India is said to be the home to the first known human civilization, the Indus Valley Civilization. The Indian art has been influenced by various cultures like the Dravidian, the Aryan, the Hindus, the Mughals and the Europeans over a period of time.

The deeply spiritual and diverse religious beliefs have played a major role in influencing the Indian art. Religion is called the way of life. The effect of religion can be clearly seen on the Indian paintings.

There are paintings depicting the life of lord Krishna. These paintings are inspired by the happenings in the lives of their gods. You will find beautifully painted picture of the birth of lord Krishna, and some depicting his victory over the cruel king Kansa and various other episodes of his life.

The Islamic period also had its influence on the Indian art. This era was inspired by Persian art. You will find the art depicted in form of miniatures in tempera on paper. The Rajputana period marked a change in the art forms. They had a belief that the nature is sacred.

This spiritual belief made them worship the various forms of nature. This is even evident from the art of their times. You will find that their painting had trees, animals and people in harmony to one another.

The Indian people have strong beliefs in their numerous Gods and Goddesses. They worship them and follow the path shown by them. This even encouraged the Indians to build beautiful worship places. Whether temples or mosques or gurudwaras or the churches all these religious buildings are a treat to see.

These buildings have the finest work of art displayed on them. People go there to worship and find peace and solace. They have intricate carvings and breathtaking interiors.

Hindus use different materials to make idols of their gods. They can be seen in clay, marble, wood, and even metals. The top of a famous gurudwara in Amritsar is even covered with pure gold and is rightly called the Golden Temple. One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal is another monument to admire the Indian art of that time. The carvings on this tomb can easily leave you wondering how much of hard work has gone into it.

Several religions including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Sikhism and Zoroastrianism. These have all influenced various styles of art, architecture, literature, music and dance, and several lifestyles of people.

India has a rich heritage in arts and architecture. It not only has the beautiful architectural structures, the carved figurines and the sculptured objects but it also has the art depicted in the field of painting, rhythm, dancing, and literary. The uniqueness of Indian art comes from its spiritual inspiration and their religious beliefs.

Five Tips on Fly Fishing for Carp

Carp are sometimes hard to catch as they are very smart, easily spooked, and hard to trick.  If you plan on fly fishing for carp, there are a few things you should know to increase your success.  This article will give you a few tips.

Flies

It’s best to use flies that imitate food that carp are used to eating.  You can use a fly that poses as a small aquatic organism such as a worm, small crayfish, or leech.  Flies that imitate mulberries and seeds from a cottonwood tree also have a higher success rate.  Carp also feed on the dragonfly, damselfly, and mayfly larvae, so flies that look like that are also useful.

Senses

When fly fishing for carp, you should know that they are extremely sensitive to smell and taste.  Therefore, you should use a commercial product to add scent to the fly.  Alternatively, you can take some mud from the river bank or bottom and rub it all over the fly.  It will do enough to help mask your scent although it’ll come off after your initial cast.

Casting

Speaking of casting, you should always cast your fly as close to the carp’s nose as possible.  They have tunnel vision when feeding.  This means that they won’t go off course to eat your fly if you don’t place it close enough.  You will have much more success only going after fish you have spotted as opposed to hoping one happens across your bait.

Spooking

As mentioned earlier, these fish are easily spooked.  Once you spook one of them, it will emit a pheromone to warn others of potential danger.  This means you usually only have one shot when fly fishing for carp.

Wind

Carp are usually found going into the direction of the wind.  However, this doesn’t mean that you should try to cast downwind to catch them.  If you try to fish going downwind, they will detect your scent quicker.  As you already know, they have a great sense of smell.  So, make sure you cast from behind them or from one of their sides.
