Recreational Fly Fishing

Fish eat bugs, plain and simple. So why not try to catch a fish by mimicking a bug? Thats what fly fishermen have been doing for centuries. Fly fishing began as a method to catch salmonids, which include mostly salmon and trout. Today fishermen use this method to attract a variety of fish ranging from carp to saltwater fish off the coast of Caribbean islands.

Fly fishing differs from traditional lure fishing in a couple of different ways. First of all, the fly fisherman has a longer, lighter rod and a heavier line. The fly fisherman will use his lines weight to cast his incredibly light weight bait: a hand Tied Fly, whereas lure fisherman will use the weight of their bait to cast their line.

The fly fisherman will aim to mimic a live bug by slapping their line against the water, causing a commotion on the top of the water and hopefully attracting fish to their realistically made flies. The flies come in a variety of colors and styles, ranging from felt and feather construction designs that look like frogs, minnows, and even shrimp. Additionally, flies come in two varieties: dry and wet. The Dry Fly, like it states, floats on top of the water and does not tip below the waters surface, while the Wet Fly will find itself submerged underwater thanks to the fishermens drastic cast.

Fly fishing is a genuine art. It takes time, practice, and skill to make the task look both doable and easy. A fly fisherman will start with his rod in front of him. He will hold a length of string in his free hand, and then swing the road behind him, directly to an angle behind his head. Then he will swing the rod forward to an approximate 45 degree angle, allowing the Free Line to move forward and slap against the water. As stated before, he hopes that this disturbance will mimic that of a bug on the waters surface and draw his food to his line.

Fly fishermen have a variety of methods and terms for casting. Different types of casts are used for different reasons. For example, a fly fisherman may want to use a false cast to draw a different kind of lazy fish to them.

The right kind of fly will also make a difference to a fisherman. Some fisherman scratch their creative itch by creating their own flies while others rely on the experts to tie them the best kind of fish, egg, worm, or mouse for their fly.

Regardless of how they cast or what they use for a fly or even where they fish, every fly fisherman will cite the incredible benefits of fly fishing with relaxation topping out the list.

How To Make That Long Airplane Journey Fly By

As an impatient, restless and easily-bored person, the idea of hours in a plane, car or train is not an attractive proposition. Planes are the worst for feeling restricted and confined, especially when you have long legs and aren’t lucky enough to get an aisle seat or additional leg-room. So, as you prepare for the long journey ahead, take a look at the following list and ensure you are well prepared.

Remember, once you are on that plane, there is no getting off to buy those things that you wish you had packed. Trains and cars offer a more flexible system, but you should still follow the same rules. You never know when you will get the chance to fill your bags with these life-saving items, so always prepare before you even start that journey.

The most uncomfortable part of the plane journey is not necessarily the plane or the journey. As Jean-Paul Sartre exclaimed in his play No Exit – “Hell is other people.” This famous phrase can often describe the feeling of annoyance as the noise, smell or constant nudging of your seat neighbour begins to irritate you to an almost psychopathic extent. There are many things that you can use to distract from this irritant, and you may need to use all of them.

The modern-day traveller has an endless amount of technology at their fingertips, and the aeroplane is the perfect place to take advantage of such great inventions. Mobile telephones are slowly becoming allowed some usage on planes, but until then, technology fans can make use of the other top inventions of the last century, the digital audio player and the handheld video game console.

The digital audio player or MP3 player offers a more convenient, streamlined and powerful version of the portable cassette player. Ten to twenty years ago, passengers would be carrying a brick-sized tape player, accompanied by a clutch of various cassettes with all their favourite tunes to keep them occupied and entertained. Today, the process is so much more simple.

A couple of weeks before your flight, download the songs that you want, put them onto your MP3 player and ensure that it is fully charged. Pack it in your hand luggage and prepare for a journey with the sound of decent music in your ears, rather than the horrendous screech of children or the monotonous drone of ‘that’ man that loves the sound of his own voice. If you don’t know who that person is, then it is probably you.

For those people old enough to remember Tetris, Sonic and Super-Mario, the next item will provoke nostalgia and emotional memories. As a child, journeys would fly by with the simple friendship of the handheld video game. There are so many of these to choose from, with simple often being the most effective. Hours will seem like minutes as you become so involved in the games, that when you close your eyes, the scenarios reappear in your mind and you continue playing them until you eventually fall asleep.

If technology is not your strong point, or your budget doesn’t stretch to these electronic saviours, there are cheaper alternatives that have been delaying boredom for hundreds of years. Magazines and newspapers can keep you interested for some time, with the additional bonus of a crossword or quiz to take up a few more precious minutes.

As a restless person, when taking magazines onto a plane, I often become annoyed with the magazine itself and regret wasting the money on purchasing it. You can buy a quiz-book or book of puzzles as these can help distract your mind for longer periods than celebrity-filled trash at three pound a go.

Facing hours on a plane and with early or late boarding times, a passenger may not have the opportunity to eat before their flight. Nearly all planes offer hot food when you travel now, but don’t expect a michelin-star meal or you may be terribly disappointed. Pack a few snacks and treats into your hand luggage, and enjoy the foods that you love without paying the sky-high prices on board.

Hand luggage is becoming increasingly important and the planning and preparation stage should be taken seriously. With more restrictions and rules in place, what you take on board will be closely monitored. Adhering to the rules, but packing important items that will help you enjoy your flight, will ensure that long-distance plane journey will fly by in the blink of an eye.

Silk Ties Make Great Corporate Gifts

What do you buy for the business man who has everything? Failing something outrageously expensive, a good quality silk tie checks all the boxes! Ties have lots of original designs and finishes, but they are nearly always suitable as executive gifts. Shopping for corporate gifts becomes easy when you realise that silk ties are high quality, original, and nearly always needed by executives who already own everything else worth buying!

So what should you look for when buying a tie as a corporate gift?

  • Most important is it’s design, corporate gifts need to be professional looking and fit into a working environment, but a well designed tie balances this with artistic –perhaps even colourful—designs. This makes ties perfect executive gifts for the man that wants to stand out in the work place.
  • Material. Corporate gifts need to be of high quality. Silk ties are exceptionally high quality and extremely desirable items. Silk ties do need more care, but few executive gits are worth looking after in the same way that a great silk tie is. Read your ties washing instructions carefully
  • Price. Silk ties can be pretty expensive or they can be relatively cheap. If you are looking to buy truly standout executive gifts then search for a designer / manufacturer of extremely high quality silk ties. Prices vary, but you know you are at the top end of silk tie prices when they are in the hundreds of dollars! The excusive price alone makes these perfect executive gifts.

Those are the three main criteria for buying ties as executive gifts; design, material and price. If you can find silk ties which fit all these criteria then you are in a sweet spot for very successful corporate gifts. Remember, great executive gifts need to be suitable for the workplace and demonstrate some exclusivity or value beyond conventional corporate gifts. Give buying ties a go, you’ll love the results!

Ties – the Safe Way to Buy Online

If you find buying a tie a pain, I’m with you. Although I’ve been in the fashion industry for the last fifteen years, there are now so many ties out there that going shopping for them really annoys me! So, that’s why I shop online, although this is fraught with it’s own dangers. That’s why I’ve come up with these five easy steps to shopping for ties online.

    1) Know what you want. Before you start to shop online, go into a store and have a look at a couple of different styles of tie. Grab the ties off the rack and touch the material, making sure you get a good understanding of what you like. Get an understanding of the pattern that you want and the material that you want. This may seem like a lot of effort, but bring a shirt to the shop and try to match it against the tie. I even have a friend who takes a photograph of the tie that he likes! Here is a warning – don’t buy at this stage! It’s very tempting once you find the right tie to buy it at the store, but the reason that we’re shopping online is that we have a greater variety at a cheaper price. Save yourself a couple of dollars, go home, and turn on the computer.

    2) Know your tie material. Make sure that the tie material from whatever site you intend to buy from matches the material that you like. If you find a site that won’t list what the ties are made from, don’t purchase ties from that site. You don’t want to purchase a tie which you assume is made of silk, only to be delivered a polyester one. Take special care with this, because the material often dictates the price, and people generally assume that if a tie is expensive, it must be silk. Not so. Ensure that you are getting the tie that you pay for.

    3) Understand colours. Dependent on your monitor, the quality of the image, and a number of other factors, the colours might not be accurate. So, what appears on the tie on your monitor may be different to the tie that you receive when you open that package. This can often relate to colour tones, but if you want to match a particular shirt with a particular tie, then you really need to make sure that the colours are accurately shown. If close enough to what you want is acceptable for buying a tie, then don’t worry about this. However if you are buying an expensive tie for a certain occasion, and the colours have to be just right, there is nothing wrong with asking the retailer to send you a photograph of the tie so that you can colour match.

    4) Shop around. Most likely, you’re not looking at a one-of-a-kind tie. There are likely several online tie stores that are going to be selling your desired product. So, shop around. This is one of the great things about buying online, take advantage of it. Get the best price, get the best service, get the most reliable vendor.

    5) Ensure that you are buying from a respectable site. I don’t care how much you are spending, if your merchant can’t guarantee your tie purchase, then go elsewhere. Ensure that the site has a returns policy. If your tie is delivered stained or watermarked, or if there is a tear in your tie, should you have to pay for that? Of course not! You expect product in wearable condition, just like you would receive if you walked into a tie store.

So, go out and shop for ties! We all want to save money and make life easier by shopping online, so remember the tips in this article.

How to Transform a Simple Corner Shower Enclosure Into a Mini-spa

Just when you thought that your corner shower enclosure is just another essential fixture in your bathroom, think again. You can actually transform it into a mini-spa. All you need to do is to equip it with different accessories. This way, you do not need to spend thousands of dollars every month for few hours of relaxation. You can do it at your own home, in your own bathroom, right inside the corner shower enclosure.

Make Sure You Can Have These

Try to prep up your corner shower enclosure with the following bathroom accessories:

    1. Monochrome Towel Ring. You basically do not need to move closer to the door just to get your towel. You can simply buy a towel ring and place it near the corner shower enclosure, perhaps mounting it on the wall. A lot of them are extremely easy to install since they can either have tile rubber or have screws to go along with them. Chrome or Stainless Steel is also ideal, because of its constant exposure to water. You do not want it to corrode very quickly.

    2. Ultimate Bathroom Set. If you want to minimize the costs of your bathroom accessory expenses, you can go for those sets that are being sold in home depots and in the World Wide Web. One of the best ones is the Ultimate Bath set, which can be composed of a bath caddy and reading rack. You can place the bath caddy inside the corner shower enclosure, while the reading rack can be put a little outside the enclosure.

    3. Shower Chair. If you are thinking of spending countess hours inside the bathroom, you might as well have a seat, where you can really sit straight on your back and allow running water to massage your entire body. You can also use a shower chair when you want to convert your corner enclosure into a sauna. It normally prevents water vapor from escaping, so the steam will be more than enough to keep those toxins out your body. In the meantime, grab a magazine or a book from the rack.

    4. Shower Radio. There are times when you want to share a shower with someone. However, it is not all the time that there is someone who can be there with you. At times when you needed your partner and she is not there, you can just turn on your shower radio. A number of them can contain both AM and FM signals. It can be directly mounted into the wall of your corner shower enclosure. Good music can also help you relax especially when you are treating yourself to a home spa.

    5. Clog Protector. Whether you like it or not, you will have falling hair when you are going to be taking a bath, which can cause some clogging into the floors of your corner shower enclosure. A clog protector will be a good addition to your fixture then. It is commonly made of stainless steel, so it does not rust right away.

Travel Destination – the Grand Tetons National Park

The Grand Tetons – Norman A. Rubin

(As one enters Grand Teton National Park the landscape can be overwhelming. The magnificent mountain range, as well as its historical background, captures the hearts of many, young and old.)

Standing on the edge of a rocky ridge, the mountain man squinted as he searched and studied the wide horizon. There in his sight were the peaks of the Grand Tetons cleared of their winter covering. The trapper threw off his furry cap in the air, and hallooed as loud as his voice can echo through the valley below.

Then the mountain pulled back from the edge of the ridge, lifted his trusty musket and pointed the barrel into the air and fired a shot. Soon returning halloos and shots were echoing over the valleys. Summer has come to the Rockies, and the mountain men gathered for another rendezvous.

One hundred and fifty years ago, when the fur trade was at its height, every mountain man would gather at the beginning of summer at a prearranged place under the Teton peaks.(1) There they would gather, barter the furs from the winter trapping, trade with local Indian tribe, swap yarns and gossip, and have one heck of a roaring time before heading back to the beaver streams for another lonely and long winter season.

Those spots for a mountain rendezvous were customarily held in a wide sheltered valley under the Teton peaks that was rich in water and game and with easy access through mountain trails. Such valleys were termed ‘holes’ by the mountain men; the one well known and popular with those grizzled trappers and trader was ‘Jackson’s Hole’, named after the famous mountain man Davy Jackson. (2)

But the valleys within the range have serious drawbacks. The mountain passes connecting the valleys are snowed in most of the year, and the wild and roaring Snake River coursing through the area is dangerously unpredictable, full of hidden rocks and sinkholes. As for farmers to plow the land or graze cattle, the soil is too rocky and there is little pasture during the winter months.

“Teton mountain range real wealth does not lie in furs, crops or cattle, but in the awe-inspiring scenery, especially the three peaks known as South, Middle, and Grand Teton.

‘Jackson Hole’ as it’s know today, is located at the Wyoming Teton Mountain Range just south of the Yellowstone National Park and has been one the crossroads of the west since prehistoric times. Blackfoot, Crow, Gros Ventre, and Nez Perce were among the Indian tribes that spent their summers there and frequently fought each other for the control of the valley’s vast herds of game roaming the pastures.

The Indians called the three peaks guarding the valleys “The Three Brothers’ or the ‘The Three White-haired Fathers’, or simply ‘the Pinnacles’. But the early French-Canadian voyageurs thought they looked like breasts, and they called these mountains them ‘Les Trois Tetons’, which means that in French and the name stuck and remained ‘The Tetons’ to this very day.

The Tetons rise so abruptly from the valley below that it is hard to believe they are actually mountains and not some skillfully artistic backdrop. Formations like these are the result of a geological movement called ‘slippage’. When pressure builds up along a fault line through the years, two rock faces slip past each other. One formation moves upward and the other move downward, creating mountains range. This is how the Teton mountain range was formed over five million years ago, which makes them comparatively young in geological terms.

Today the sharp crags and the sheer faces of the Teton Peaks provide and exciting challenge for mountain climbing enthusiasts. Visitors to Grand Teton National Park can take exciting rafting or kayak trips down the swift Snake River, or climb into a saddle for a pack trip into back country, with its spectacular scenery and the presence of great herds of elk and mule deer.

There’s a rendezvous in Jackson Hole every summer, and you’re invited. See you there!

    NOTES:
    1) With the decline of the fur trade and the passing of the great Indian tribes, Jackson Hole was largely abandoned except for a few homesteaders and other citizens who found the valley’s isolation to their liking.

    2) The Snake River connected with the Columbia, Missouri River systems provided a convenient highway across the Rockies as far west as Oregon for the beaver hunters.

    SIDEBAR:
“Located in northwestern Wyoming, Grand Teton National Park protects spectacular mountain scenery and a diverse collection of wildlife. The central feature of the park – the Teton Range — is a 40-mile-long mountain front rising from the valley floor some 6,000 feet. The towering Tetons were formed from earthquakes that occurred over the past 13 million years along a fault line. The jagged range includes its signature peak – Grand Teton, 13,770 feet (4,198 m) – and at least twelve pinnacles over 12,000 feet (3,658 m). Seven morainal lakes adorn the base of the range, and more than 100 alpine lakes dot the backcountry.
Elk, moose, mule deer, bison and pronghorn, are commonly found in the park. Black bears roam the forests and canyons, while grizzlies range throughout more remote portions of the park. More than 300 species of birds can be observed, including bald eagles, peregrine falcons and trumpeter swans.”

Polar Bear More Information Concerning Bears

Brown bears are technically carnivores, but in practice most of their diet consists of plant matter such as sedges, grasses, bulbs, seeds, berries, and roots. They will also eat insects, fish, and small mammals. Some of these bears have even developed predatory practices on large animals, including moose, caribou, and elk.

The polar bear is a mighty hunter of seals. The most carnivorous of the bears, it is also the most patient. They will sit near a seal blow-hole for hours, waiting, until the animal surfaces. When it does, it is all over for the seal. One powerful blow from a forepaw brings a swift meal for the bear and a swifter death for the seal.

    www.theplonkerclub.com

The conditions of the polar north are harsh, with temperatures well below freezing almost constantly. In order to survive, the polar bear has to be an expert survivalist, able to cope with the grueling conditions of his environment. Like a giant solar panel, the skin of the bear is black to draw every bit of possible heat from the sunlight. The hairs if the pelt appear to be white, but are actually transluscent and transmit the light down to the skin. Below these hairs are “underhairs” of orange or yellow.

Like those of other bears, the ears of the polar bear are round. They are, however, smaller and closer to the head. This, along with the overall shape of the animal help to make it a formidable swimmer. The paws are large, and slightly webbed, which also contribute to the bear’s abilities as a swimmer.

There is a great degree of sexual dimorphism among the bears as well. The males are huge, the heaviest of them weighing as much as 1300 pounds. The females are smaller, the largest of them being only about 600 pounds.

The boars do not generally hibernate, but remain active for most of the year. The pregnant females are the exception to this, however. They go through a denning and hibernation period, just like that of the black, brown, and other bears.

Polar bears are more agressive than other bears. Even in captivity.

The asiatic black bear has many similarities to its American cousin. Both are medium sized, and black. The ears of the asiatic bear are large and seem inappropriately sized to the rest of its head and those of other bears. These bears have a white patch of fur on their chest, which is often shaped like a V, with some varying amount of white on their chin as well. Occasionally, they can be found in a brown color phase.

The asiatic black bears are not as widely studied as the other bears, so very little information is available about their relative size and other statistics. Generally, they have been found to be 50-75 inches in length. The males usually weigh from 220-440 pounds, and the females from 110-275 pounds.

These bears can be found throughout Southern Asia. They are known in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, Sikkim, Northern India, Bhutan, and into Burma. They can also be found in Northeast China, and Southeast Russia, Taiwan, and the Japaneese islands of Honshu and Shikoku. Mostly, these bears live in forested areas, especially hilly and mountainous places. The preferred elevations change seasonally. In summer, asiatic black bears have been spotted at over 9,900 feet–moving to lower elevations as the cold of winter comes on. In the northern parts of their range, they den for winter. Current thinking is that the bears in the southern reaches do not hibernate.

The diet of the asiatic black bear is quite diverse. They eat carrion, bee’s nests, insects, invertibrates, small vertibrates, and fruit. They have been known to kill domestic livestock, but to what degree they exhibit this predation is not known. They are also known to make daybeds and feeding platforms in nut-bearing trees
