The History And Characteristics Of The Jazz Combo

Jazz is an American art form whose roots date back to the mid-19th century slave songs and chants. The early 20th century saw the art form blossom as instrumental music in the southern United States, mainly along the Mississippi river and specifically New Orleans, Louisiana.

Early instrumental jazz combos of New Orleans varied in instrumentation. More often than not, these early jazz groups generally consisted of trumpet, clarinet, trombone, tuba and drums. This instrumentation became what is known as the “dixieland” combo, making its way up the Mississippi river to Chicago where the music became popularized by jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong.

Dixieland combos can be thought of as groups that play “polyphonic” improvisational music. Each instrument is independent of every other instrument, with each player creating separate musical improvisations based on known melodies, or “tunes” of the day.

The players of these early jazz combos each had a separate role within the group. The trumpet player was depended upon to state the melody of the song, while the clarinet would improvise complex lines above him. The trombonists role was to improvise or “fill in” the middle register with lines and notes that were essential to the chord changes of the song itself. The tuba player (or bass player) generally laid down root notes (and 5ths) of each chord on beats 1 and 3 of each measure. The tuba served as the harmonic anchor for the group. Lastly, it was the drummers role to keep everyone together by keeping a steady beat throughout the entirety of the song.

As jazz music developed throughout the 1940s and 1950s, jazz combo instrumentation began to become more standardized. The jazz “quintet” and “sextet” became very popular during this time. The quintet consisted of trumpet and alto (or tenor) sax as the main melodic instruments while the rhythm section (piano, bass and drums) took care of rhythm and harmony.

The sextet added a trombone to form what essentially was a three horn front line, with rhythm section accompaniment. The extra melodic instrument of the sextet made it possible for the horns to add more harmonic depth to the sound of the group. Each instrument had a role not only as a melodic voice, but also as an integral component of the harmonic structure as well.

Modern jazz combos consist of a variety of instrumentation – 4, 5 horn combos are common place. As the group grows in size however, the name “combo” is replaced by “band” or “little big band”.

The jazz combo has provided a musical and creative outlet for countless musicians over the last 100 years. The jazz combo continues to provide jazz musicians the opportunity to work together to make music not only as a group but also to develop their own voice as individual jazz improvisers. It is, and probably always will be, the perfect vehicle for learning the art of jazz improvisation.

Guide to Couplers for Model Railroad Trains Toys

Couplers are used to connect various model railroad train cars together. Couplers are typically either hook or knuckle type. Couplers have three distinct criteria. First, they must join the cars when the cars are pushed against each other. Second, the coupler needs to be able to be uncoupled. Third, from the manufacturer’s perspective, the coupler must be inexpensive to produce. Additionally, model railroad train enthusiasts prefer a coupler that looks realistic.

Horn hook couplers are the “standard” couplers usually included with a purchased model railroad train set. Horn hooks are typically included on trains toys. The horn-hook looks like a hook or the handle end of a cane, which joins the cars together. As the model railroad train cars are pushed together, the spring-action of the hooks connects them. The couplers rely on side-to-side pressure to hold the cars together. This can create problems when backing up the train as the pressure is loosened, possibly causing derailment. To uncouple a car, you can either lift it off the track and release the hook or use a device (such as a toothpick) to pop the train cars apart. For the casual model railroad train fan, horn hook couplers are usually sufficient.

Knuckle couplers resemble a person’s knuckles and look more realistic when compared to real-life trains. The knuckle couplers join together much as two hands are joined together fingers-to-fingers. This creates a fairly tight fit that will hold the train cars together around curves and in reverse. To uncouple the train cars, you can install magnetic un-couplers. They work by separating train cars as they pass over a magnet mounted under the track. The couplers contain one or two magnetized pins that sit just above track level. When the train is stopped over the magnet and then reversed, the cars become uncoupled. Alternatively, you can disconnect the cars by using a disconnect tool such as the “Switchman.” This tool is inserted in the knuckle couplers and rotated to pop the train cars apart. With this tool, you can uncouple train cars from anywhere on the track.

A model train railroad enthusiast might consider converting from a hook-style to a knuckle-style coupler to provide a more realistic and easier-to-operate system. The conversion could be costly as you might need to build shims to keep the pins and couplers at the correct train-to-track height. This is especially important when lining up knuckle-style couplers with magnetic de-couplers. If you have an extra train car, you might consider leaving it with one hook-style end and one knuckle-style end for ease of moving train cars around your track.

For a trains toy, the standard coupler is usually the best choice as children are often not as careful with their toys as a true model railroad fan. However, if your child’s interest in his trains toy is growing, you might consider upgrading him to a railroad train model set and teach him how to convert the couplers.

·        Monopolistic Business Model :- It is a nearly a situation in which a single firm is the sole provider of a product or service. Indian PSUs is likely to command such situation for certain capital intensive high end product although Globalized economy can always  throw up challenge.

Pricing Strategy should be to set price where Marginal Cost should be at least equal to Marginal revenue. Reduction of operating cost by virtue of all Management techniques will maximize earning.

It is also often argued that monopolies tend to become less efficient and innovative over time, becoming “complacent giants”, because they don’t have to be efficient or innovative to compete in the marketplace.  Regulations and creating business focus of the company may have limited instrumentality in arresting such situation.

·        Service Quality Model . In it, customer satisfaction is first based on a recent experience of the product or service. This assessment depends on prior expectations of overall quality compared to the actual performance received. If the recent experience exceeds prior expectations, customer satisfaction will likely to be high. Customer satisfaction can also be high even with mediocre performance quality if the customer’s expectations are low, or if the performance provides value (that is, it is priced low to reflect the mediocre quality). Likewise, a customer can be dissatisfied with the service encounter and still perceive the overall quality to be good. This occurs when a quality service is priced very high and the transaction provides little value. A an appropriate model for Indian PSUss.

·        Outsourcing  Considerations:- Looking fact that 73% of top global companies outsourced some processes or other, Indian PSUs‘ business strategy should encompass outsourcing philosophy in major scale primarily due to :-

Ø     Concentrate on Focus Areas / Core Competencies.

Ø     Access to World Class Capabilities, rather than possessing them.

Ø     Risks can be shared in terms of Capital Investments, etc

Ø     Reduction in Operating Costs.

Ø     Resources not available internally. Companies outsource because they do not have access to the required resources within the company. Sometimes this is due to expansion or reorganization. It may also be due to changing business requirements.

Ø     Accelerate re-engineering benefits. Outsourcing is often a by-product of another powerful management tool, business process re-engineering. It allows an organization to immediately realize some benefits from this process.

Ø     Cash Infusion. Outsourcing often involves the transfer of assets from the customer to the provider, such as equipment, facilities, leases and licenses.

Teen drinking, never safe

The current trend to introduce alcohol to teenagers before the legal drinking age of eighteen needs to be urgently reviewed in light of recent Australian research into adolescent drinking.

A team from Melbourne’s Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, tracked 1520 young people’s drinking habits over a ten year period and found that there is no safe drinking level for teenagers.

Adolescents under the age of eighteen who drink even small amounts of alcohol have significantly higher risk of alcohol abuse when they move into early adulthood. In fact, low level drinkers resemble more closely high level drinkers than those who didn’t drink at all when it comes to alcohol-related problems.

This research provides evidence for a move away from the harm minimization approach, where teenagers are taught to drink sensibly, and even for a rise in the minimum drinking age.

The move toward zero alcohol for under 18’s has plenty of backing from health experts across the nation. There is no doubt teen drinking is linked to a variety of risk-taking behaviours particularly sexual activity, violence and anti-social behaviours.

The brain research conducted over the last ten or so years leaves little doubt that those who begin drinking under eighteen years of age are highly susceptible to developing dependency problems in their twenties. 

A type of hard-wiring of the connections on the brain occurs from the age of 13 through to 18, which means habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol are more likely to become ingrained at this stage, than if they began in their twenties.  In much the same way that complex sporting skills learned in this age stay for life, so too do less healthy teenage past-times such as lying on the couch, playing video games and drinking become habit forming.

The evidence suggests that we need to question the appropriateness of the harm minimization approach and consider the zero alcohol approach for young people.

This will be challenging to say the least as the current trend of young people to up-age, is almost reaching epidemic levels.  Twelve-year-olds now want to dress like 16 year-olds and 16 year olds want to act like 21 year olds, with the same rights but few of the responsibilities of adults.

Increasingly, drinking alcohol is seen by young people as an essential rite of passage that should be allowed at an earlier and earlier age.

The pressure that young people now put on adults to allow them to drink under age is enormous. Under-age drinking is now seen by many young people as normal and those parents who resist can be made to feel so out of sync that surely they must come from another planet.

There is no doubt rolling back the drinking age or suggesting that young people delay drinking until they are eighteen will be met with enormous resistance from young people.

That’s why introducing zero alcohol for under eighteens needs strong adult leadership involving schools, parents and community groups.

But the evidence seems abundantly clear for the long term best interests of young people that increasingly this is the only option that right-minded people should take.

How To Get A Flat Belly With Six Pack Abs

So you want to flatten your belly and reveal your chiseled 6 pack abs? It is actually rather simple to do so. I did say simple, but did not said that it is easy. It takes a lot of grit and determination to do so. However, if your motivation is strong enough, you will get there.

When I said it is not easy because there is no short cut to get a flat belly with 6 pack abs. Only those late night informercials can give you fake promises that certain gizmos can help you get a flat belly. If you want an easy way out, then part your money to those advertisers forever and then get ready to be disappointed.

No, even if you perform a trillion sit ups and leg raisers day in and day out is not gonna get you the coveted six pack abs. To get a flat belly you want, you will need to put in some work and get educated with some science.

Here some helpful pointers to help you achieve your flat belly objective and if you stick on to it, you will find that not only will your belly get flatter week after week, you will also reduce excess body fat from all parts of your body and soon, your 6 pack abs will be revealed.

Correct eating habit and nutrition is the most important factor in getting a flat stomach. Therefore you will need to control your blood sugar levels to lose body fat. One way to do that is to consume five to six meals small meals a day. Please note, I said small meals, such as dividing the portion of your three daily meals into 5-6 smaller meals.

Next, reduce your carbohydrate consumption to about 50 percent or less from your meals. Most people eat way too much carbs anyway and before their body can burn the carbs for energy, the carbs would have been converted to glycogen and the further excess carbs into body fat.

Consume your small meals at 2 to 3 hours intervals. This is because when your stomach is empty, your body will tend to conserve fat for energy and by eating frequently. You won’t want that to happen right? Furthermore, you will be controlling your blood sugar level to encourage fat loss and you will start to lose weight gradually.

However, if you are still not losing weight, then you are consuming too many calories. In this case, make your meals even smaller by reducing more carbs.

By the first week, you will probably lose between 4 to 5 pounds (about 2kg) of water weight and some body fat. By continuing to eat like this, you should be losing about 1 to 2 pounds per week. If you are losing weight more than that, then you are probably losing muscle weight too. In this case, then increase your carbs consumption a little until you achieve a gradual weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds a week.

However, if you are not losing 1 to 2 pounds per week, then reduce another 100 calories from your meals. Remember to abstain from sugar laden drinks such as soda and soft drinks as these drinks are chock full of calories. Alcohol consumption is a big fat No No!

Now, when you are losing weight, your belly will get flatter and flatter but you will still need to incorporate exercises into your weight loss routine to burn more calories as well as getting your muscles toned and getting the 6 pack abs. Furthermore, for every pound of muscle you that you gain on your body, you will burn 30-50 extra calories a day. You will then become a natural calorie burner.

Is this get flat belly program easy? Nope, it is not and that is why so few people have flat bellies and tight six pack abs. However, it is definitely achievable if your motivation to have a flat belly is strong enough.

If you a quite comfortable with DIY jobs then this won’t be a problem and will be considered by yourself as easy, but if you have never picked up a screw driver in your life and look at a nail like it is a foreign object then you may find it a little tricky. Restoring Secondhand Houses With Secondhand Materials

If you’ve bought a fixer-upper, you may be making a list of the materials that you need to purchase in order to repair or replace. This is an ideal time to make eco-friendly practices work for you, both in terms of the environment and your wallet. By choosing previously used materials whenever possible, you can save money and also be eco-friendly.

Buying a home is a significant investment, but buying a home in need of repair can be even more of an investment, initially. In order to cash in on the increased equity that repair and redecorating will likely bring, you need to invest some time, effort and money into the renovation process.

First, look around your home. Go from room to room and have a separate list for each room, as well as the exterior of the house and the roof. Make a list of things that need to be repaired and things that need replacing. Get a binder and put all of these lists into it. Since it can be a big job to completely fix up a house, consider focusing on one room/area at a time.

Wherever possible, obtain used materials to repair and replace these things. Avoid replacing something if it can be repaired; for instance, wood window frames will outlast vinyl frames with a little maintenance, and look a lot better, especially in an older home. The one exception can be appliances, as replacing an old stove with an energy efficient one can be better both for your electricity bill and the environment. Make sure you dispose of the old stove where it can be reused or recycled properly.

Where can you get materials? It is amazing (and deplorable) how much can be found in the local landfills and, even if your tastes run to dumpster diving, landfill operators can be loathe to let you poke around. However, since recycling is in vogue, they may allow you to look through some of the stuff brought in, especially if it’s recently dumped stuff. It’s worth a try, but don’t expect too much.

Dumpster diving is a possibility, if you are strong and agile. However, it is wise to get the permission of the person or organization using the dumpster, as some items may be dangerous, messy or actually not junk. If you are not sure, ask, and always clean up after yourself so you (and others) may be allowed back.

Recycling centers are starting to take off in a big way. They can have everything from old blankets to tiles to various bits of hardware. The nice people there may also have resources that can help you with your quest to reuse stuff for your home.

Many communities have “free” days, where people are encouraged to drag out their useless sculptures, hideous purple sofas and three-legged desks and hope that someone else wants them. The cliche “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure” is a cliche for a reason, especially on these days where you can find dedicated fans of this practice cruising the suburbs at 4 AM in order to get the best “finds”.

The garage sale is still a traditional favorite for finding what you want and need on the cheap. Sometimes, if you see something you like that doesn’t have a price tag (like that lumber lying abandoned at the side of the house), make an offer. You may also find some deals if you chat up the people holding the sale – if one of them is involved in construction or home repair, they may have some valuable items they didn’t put out for perceived lack of interest.

Contact the local eco-people. You know, the ones who are constantly lobbying for cleaner water, better building practices and against dumping in ecological areas? Many of them would be thrilled to aid someone dedicated to reusing and recycling material instead of buying new. There are many eco-friendly options for the fixer-upper that your local green store may be able to hook you up with.

Never underestimate casual opportunity. If you see people demolishing a house or part of a house and it looks like they’re getting rid of stuff you want, offer to take it off their hands. You may be able to get it for free or for a much lower price than you would pay elsewhere – especially if you have cash on hand. It usually helps to have a good idea what the item you’re bargaining for costs on the open market.

Your local reclaim operation may have just what you’re looking for. Many of these operations exist solely on reclaimed wood and other materials, transforming it into flooring and other products and reselling it. If you’re looking for wood and can’t find it anywhere else, your last port of call is here, where they will sell you reclaimed wood (for a price).

With a little ingenuity, you can obtain useful materials with very little outlay of cash. Not to mention, patting yourself on the back for recycling.
