How To Use Saltwater Fishing Hooks Effectively

In many people’s minds, a fishing hook is just a hook, but choosing saltwater fishing hooks can be one of the most important parts of having a successful fishing excursion. Of course, choosing the right size for your hooks based on the species of fish you’ll be pursuing is important, but you should more importantly determine the right type of hook to use on your excursion.

When you are targeting smaller fish, obviously smaller hooks are required. However, there are other factors to take into consideration before you make the final determination. What line size are you using? What species is your main target fish for the day (you need to know more than just the size of the fish – there are other characteristics of the fish that will make a difference)? What type of bait are you going to load onto your saltwater fishing hooks? Also, determine what fishing structure you’ll be targeting – shallows, deep waters, wreckage, and reefs all call for different types of saltwater fishing hooks.

Most of the time, you don’t want to use a thick forged hook because, often, the fish will escape your hook before you can get it into the boat. Instead, your choice of hooks should be something like a thin Aberdeen wire hook because it will much more easily and efficiently penetrate the hard inside of many species’ mouths. Perhaps using a number 1 or a 1/0 regular shank Aberdeen will offer the best solution for bait-stealing fish.

Of course, choosing the size of your hooks will probably be the first thing that comes to mind when shopping for your gear. For large game fish, like those you’ll find in saltwater, fishing hooks should be at least 1 or 1/0, though the largest game fish will use a 19/0 hook. The smallest fishing hooks, a number 32, are used for freshwater fishing for extremely small fish like trout, just to give you an idea of the difference. Most experienced anglers know what size hooks are required for the particular type of fish they plan to target. Keep in mind, however, that all of these options can be found with short, regular, and long shanks (the shank is the part between the eye of the hook and the bend). This adds to your sizing options.

Once you know the size you need, it’s time to sort through the various types of hooks. If you are going to be targeting large bottom fish, the O’Shaughnessy may be helpful to you. It is relatively thick, strong, and not likely to bend out of shape, with a very strong bend. They typically are found in sizes ranging between number 3 and 19/0, good for all types of saltwater fishing.

Why Dating is a Sport – Just Like Fishing!

Some women don’t understand that that dating is a sport – just like baseball, hockey, basketball and fishing.

These are the women at home alone weekend after weekend, fearful of flirting with a guy or taking the initiative to engage him in some way. And asking a man out on a date is unimaginable! Feeling that they are “too shy” or “too afraid of rejection” these ladies don’t understand that flirting and simple conversation such as “Hi there! My name is Deborrah, what’s yours?” is pretty much all they need to do to get things rolling.

Fearful people want guarantees that if they work up the nerve to flirt or converse with an attractive man they will have something to show for it at the end of the exchange. Doesn’t work that way folks. There are no guarantees in life, nor in dating, and there are certainly no guarantees in fishing!

True fisherman will freeze in the cold, get up at 3:00 a.m., and spend hours and hundreds of dollars on bait, tackle, special fishing chairs, and rubber hip boots to wade into the water with. They expend all this effort and money just to bag a stinky fish or a dead animal with bullet holes in it that they can boast endlessly about.

Should he be successful, a man will find great enjoyment in telling the story of that battle over and over again for years.

Fishermen use strategy and they use patience. They also dress appropriately for the environment in which they will be working, and they use the right bait. They may practice their craft in their back yard – throwing out their line until satisfied they can hit the mark and get their bait within inches of the spot aimed for.

Fishermen will then travel miles and miles (sometimes hundreds) to get to an area where the “fish are biting” or where it is rumored that the “biggest fish are.”
These guys aren’t there because they are guaranteed they will get a fish at all, especially the size or quantity of fish they hope to catch! Nope.

They are out there trying to catch a fish, and eagerly anticipating having a good time while doing it. They’ll sometimes be there from the crack of dawn until late in the night, focused intently on catching that one fish.
The determination and fixed focus is amazing to behold. And if a lucky fisherman should catch more than one fish, then it’s REALLY a good day!

This is the approach women need to have about dating.

Hey, This Sounds Like Fun!

Let’s say you decide to give fishing a try. There are three things that will happen when you finally arrive at the fishing spot and bait your hook:

(1) The man (fish) will swim up to the bait, look at it (maybe take a sample nibble). But then he decides that what is on your hook is not to his liking and he swims away. No problem. Re-bait and throw the line out again.

(2) He may take the bait, but only a little bit. He hook is merely caught a bit in his lip. When you try to reel him in and land him, he wiggles around and jumps off the hook. Hitting the water with a splash, he swims quickly away and disappears into the depths. It’s as if he were never there, he is gone so swiftly. You are disappointed because you almost had him! When this happens it means you were too aggressive, tried to rush the process, and forgot to use finesse when handling your fish. You didn’t let the fish hook HIMSELF.

(3) The fish will look at the bait, take a nibble, decide it’s yummy and with a big gulp, swallows the hook. When you yank that pole to set the hook and reel him in, there is no way in hell he is getting away! The bait and the hook are firmly embedded, and that fish is yours for the taking. Reel him in at a leisurely pace and enjoy his useless fighting to get away!

Yikes! This Fish Is a Reject!

Admittedly, there will be occasions when you hook a fish that you discover later isn’t what quite what you were hoping to catch. However, some women are so desperate for a fish that they will keep it. Any fish is better than no fish in their book!

But more discerning women will examine and subsequently throw back a fish that is by law too small, inedible, defective, or a different species than they were fishing for. Those reject fish will end up right on back in the water for other women to bother with because the fish is not what we wanted.

Sure, you invested time, energy and bait, and maybe even lost some tackle along the way, but so what? There are many more fish out there bigger and better and more to your liking.

On the flip side of the coin, sometimes you will throw your baited line out there and nothing will bite.

Sometimes you throw your hook out there and get caught on an old tire, or hook nothing but seaweed, and you’ll loose your bait and hook when you have to cut the line to get free. That’s all right too. Do fishermen quit just because of one little episode like that? NO! They dig into that tackle box, set the line up again and throw it back in the water.

Where Do I Find The Fish I Want?

Choosing your fishing spot is very important. Perhaps you’ve discovered that the area in which you are fishing is rocky or choking with debris. Good fishermen know when to cut their losses! They pack up and move to another area where the water is clearer, the fishing is better, and with smiles and laughs they start all over again!

Live bait is gross and wiggly, and dead bait might not be your flavor either. But you know what? You aren’t a fish!

If you want a prize fish, you give the fish what the fish wants! You also go fishing in the spot where you can catch the kind of fish you want to take home. Do you want wild river fish, a calm lake fish, or a stock pond farm raised variety? You don’t go fishing for catfish (bottom feeders) if you want a lively trout, and you don’t fish in a calm lake waters for a sturgeon.

The “fish” are biting, and I know this really great spot…

Rug Hooking for a Craft Business

Rug hooking has made a big comeback.. this is an older craft, that is now a form of art and stress relief!.. as it is a relaxing craft… Get started now for your fall hobbies or craft business!

There are a couple of basic types of rug hooking, the first one is the latch hook type, which usually comes as a kit, and has a picture already on it, and once you learn to use the hook, you follow the instructions with the co-ordinate pre-cut wool pieces.

The other type, is using fabric strips, this one takes a bit more planning and preparation but the results are works of art. They can be done on a burlap backing, or a stiffer backing, depending on what you want the rug for, whether its to hang on the wall as art, or you are going to use it on the floor.

Either way, you can design your picture right on the burlap backing, and then find or make strips of fabric in the right colors, and the hooking is more of a continuous loop rather than small pieces.

Its like creating a painting in fabrics, getting supplies can be difficult sometimes, but with the advance of the internet, you can find lots of different supplies online. With the summer winding down, and the kids going back to school, why not check out rug hooking for your new hobby, or craft business..

This is also a great alternative to painting, why not create your work of art with fabric strips and a hook, and have an original unique rug.. people tend to love “useable art” at craft shows, and this would qualify for sure!

How to Play and Land Your Fish (part Two – Setting the Hook)

Now, you really can’t hope to land any sort of decent fish unless you’ve set the hook properly. As a general rule, it’s better to wait a little rather than set the hook too soon.

When you are ready to set the hook, bring in all the slack line, bring the rod tip down and point towards the fish, or where you think it’s likely to be if you can’t actually see. Bring the rod up sharply, and the chances are that you’ve hooked your fish.

Of course, that’s neccesarily a very simple, basic description. Setting the hook consistently does require a certain knack, which comes only with experience and practice. Some species, those that grab your lure and run, are easy to hook, almost to the point of self-hooking. Others, which suck and nibble, can be a problem.

Catfish for example will have a few chews, then swallow your bait down. Carp, and other “sucking” species hold the bait gently between their lips, and they should be allowed plenty of time to suck it in before you tighten the line and bring in your fish. Perch, bluegills, sunfish, and other panfish will bite nervously at the bait. These nibblers require lots of patience and self-control.

Many anglers just can’t wait, and as soon as they feel a few light “pecks” or “knocks” strike back. This simply jerks the hook away from the fish, and loses your bait. It’s nuch better to wait till you feel a strong tug, or feel the fish move away with your bait. Then a sharp lift of the rod will often set the hook. You will learn from experience when the tugs are strong enough for you to strike.

The larger the fish, and the larger the hook, the stronger the yank needed. And to confuse matters slightly, speed in striking back can sometimes be essential. For example, if you’re fishing surface lures, you should strike as soon as the fish hits the lure. Waiting even a fraction of a second could lose you the fish. Often these fish will hook themselves, but the added pull from you will set the hook firmly. Even when trolling, when we are expecting the fish to hook itself, it’s wise to give the rod a good firm yank.

Water conditions can often determine the timing of setting a hook. For instance, in swiftly moving water, the trout doesn’t have much time to decide wether or not to take a Dry Fly. When he does decide to take it, he does it with a rush, often hooking himself in the process. In still water there is much more time for him to look at what you are offering and take it slow. In these conditions trout will rarely hook themdelves, and you must strike quickly to set the hook.

When small Wet Flies are used, the line friction alone is often enough to hook the fish. In nymph-fishing downstream, raising the rod tip smartly will generally be all that’s required at the moment the hit is felt.

Some fish are slow, deliberate hitters, so your strike should be delayed. For example, when an atlantic salmon takes a dry fly, let him turn after the rise, and he’ll hook himself when the line tightens.

Finally, to hook a fish, your barb must penetrate the fish’s mouth, and for this reason it must be sharp. A good angler will test his hooks for sharpness before use. He will keep a small whetstone in his tackle box to hone his hooks as needed. And if that’s too much trouble, hooks are cheap. Never use old, worn, blunt hooks. For the sake of a few cents you could lose “the big one.”

Fishing Baits And Hooks – 2 Tips To Use Them Effectively

To bait the fish that you really have set your heart on, you will need the proper fishing equipment. You will need the bait and the equipment for angling according to the type of fish that you are planning to bait. If you do not have the proper gear it may not be easy to get what you want and even if you do, may not be able to haul it in. The market is now flooded with various kinds of options of fishing tackle, so you can take your pick of what exactly is required for your kind of fishing and go for it. It is essential that you do some research before you go in for any equipment to ensure that you have the correct gear.

1. Tips on a successful fishing trip

One of the most essential tips for fishing is the right kind of bait. Different fish require different kinds of bait and you will have to see what bait is needed for the kind of fish you are planning to catch. There are several kinds of bait which can be bought at the market locally or you could bring it with you. The baits are chicken livers, salmon eggs or what is referred to as stink bait. If you do some research on the sort of biting habits the fish that you intend to catch has, it will help you to get the correct bait and make your fishing expedition even more successful.

2. The hook is also important

Another important aspect of your fishing tackle is the hook that holds the bait. These hooks are available in various sizes. Here again the size of the hook will depend on the size of the fish that you are angling for. You would need larger hooks for fish like bas and smaller ones for bluegill and catfish. So along with the correct bait you would also need the proper sized hook.

The hook has to sink to the bottom of the water so that you can get the fish that are normally feeding at the lower levels of water. To make the hooks and the lines go down you would need weights and sinkers. Sinkers are available in different shapes and sizes and weights. You should pick one according to the kind of rod that you are using and the conditions of the water. It is better to play it safe and carry a variety of sinkers with you so that you have many options on hand with you and one of them will be exactly what you may require.

If you are unsure of what you should buy, the merchandiser will be able to assist you with the correct choice. It is always safer to ask if you do not know what the right bait and other fishing tackle that you have to get is. There is no point in undertaking and expedition without the proper and appropriate gear, you may end up with no catch then.

Fish Flying- Hook It Right

Fish flying when considered as a sport, consists of several specialized expertise coming in delicate balance of precision and rhythm. One of the specialized skills is setting up the hook. Most often this technique is neglected by most fly fishermen when they spend lots of hours reading and practicing about fly tying and casting skills. It is nearly impossible to practice to set up the hook when there is no live fish at the other end of the waters. This is unlike most other skills.

At the outset, a successful hook essentially starts when the fly is tied either on the river bank or at home. Ensure that the hooks are as sharp as the razor. When the hook is dull, there are fewer chances of finding the mark in the trout’s mouth.

In most techniques of fly fishing, it is important that you set the hook very soon as possible. When the water is fast, the trout strikes the fly sooner and with good force. The trout would soon realize that there is an artificial fly in its mouth and it could and would spit it out in less than a splitting second.

When Fly fishing is tried in slow moving water, it would act as an exception to set the hook sooner. If the water gets slow the trout would act more leisurely. They might take a second or two to have the fly. If the hook is set too soon, you would be likely to pull the fly away very soon. However, if the hook is set late, then the trout might spit it outside. Such is a delicate balance which often gets into fly fishing.

At times, when fishermen try fly fishing, they become so excited that when they hook a trout, it is done with a huge force. Such attempts usually result in broken tippits. Quick setting the hook doesn’t mean applying force. A way to avoid breaking the tippits would be using a slip for striking which would cushion the tippit.

When fly fishing in an upstream presentation, you could strip in between the line with the hand as the hook is set. This would take off major slack in the line improving chances for better hook set.

As you set the hook with the help of surface techniques in fly fishing, it is important to be able to view the fly so that you get a good hook set. When fly fishing is done with the help of underwater technique, it is significant to see the indicator as the hook is set. Right timing is relevant every instance.

A lot of experienced fly fishermen keep spending a lot of time wondering about the strike and how they would move as the hook is set. When imaginary trout’s are hooked to land in your hands, you would have higher chances of getting the actual fishes when fly fishing techniques are attempted.

Punching flies good for accuracy/reaction time?

A couple days ago I hit a fly with a perfect Chuck Liddell spinning back fist. It didn’t come back.

So I got the idea of just trying to hit flies with my jabs and hooks and whatnot. I guess after a while you’d have some pretty pinpoint attacks huh

Ali done that in the 60′s but I’d suggest learning to juggle as it will not only improve your reactions but also your peripheral vision.

Best wishes :) ***

Barbeque Utensil Hooks

If you are tired of leaving all your barbeque tools lying around, it’s definitely time to invest in some barbeque utensil hooks. These little gadgets are extremely useful and will help keep your tools cleaner and much more sanitary. There are several different kinds of these hooks on the market. Here’s a quick little guide to help you find the right kind for your needs.

Utensils with Built-in Hooks – These are probably the easiest to use and won’t require much installation at home. If you have a grill that doesn’t have space to include barbeque utensil hangers, these will be the easiest fit. This kind of tool typically includes a hook at the end so that you can hang it on your grill, on the wall or anywhere in your kitchen. The downside is of course having to purchase new tools, but overall these are the best value and will work great.

When you are shopping for this type of barbeque utensil hook make sure that the handle is made of a solid material that will not crack. Since the hook is built-in to the end of the handle, you run the risk of losing it if the handle breaks. Try to find a set that is made of Stainless Steel which will last much longer.

Hangers for Your Grill – If you have a big grill with a lot of extra space, there are several different types of barbeque utensil hooks that will work for you. In some cases, your grill may have pre-drilled holes for easy installation of your hooks. If it doesn’t, make sure you drill in an area that won’t affect the cooking elements or the operation of the grill.

If you don’t want to permanently install barbeque utensil hooks on your grill, look for a hook set that will clamp on to the side or one that includes a magnetic strip. These will be better to deal with in the long run and much easier to keep maintained.

Hangers for Your Wall – If you have an outdoor barbeque area, try to find a set of barbeque utensil hooks that you can install right into a wall near the grilling surface. You’ll always have a place to store your tools and they will be much easier to find. If you are drilling into brick or masonry, make sure to anchor your barbeque utensil hooks properly so they don’t fall out of the wall.

Restoring Secondhand Houses With Secondhand Materials

If you’ve bought a fixer-upper, you may be making a list of the materials that you need to purchase in order to repair or replace. This is an ideal time to make eco-friendly practices work for you, both in terms of the environment and your wallet. By choosing previously used materials whenever possible, you can save money and also be eco-friendly.

Buying a home is a significant investment, but buying a home in need of repair can be even more of an investment, initially. In order to cash in on the increased equity that repair and redecorating will likely bring, you need to invest some time, effort and money into the renovation process.

First, look around your home. Go from room to room and have a separate list for each room, as well as the exterior of the house and the roof. Make a list of things that need to be repaired and things that need replacing. Get a binder and put all of these lists into it. Since it can be a big job to completely fix up a house, consider focusing on one room/area at a time.

Wherever possible, obtain used materials to repair and replace these things. Avoid replacing something if it can be repaired; for instance, wood window frames will outlast vinyl frames with a little maintenance, and look a lot better, especially in an older home. The one exception can be appliances, as replacing an old stove with an energy efficient one can be better both for your electricity bill and the environment. Make sure you dispose of the old stove where it can be reused or recycled properly.

Where can you get materials? It is amazing (and deplorable) how much can be found in the local landfills and, even if your tastes run to dumpster diving, landfill operators can be loathe to let you poke around. However, since recycling is in vogue, they may allow you to look through some of the stuff brought in, especially if it’s recently dumped stuff. It’s worth a try, but don’t expect too much.

Dumpster diving is a possibility, if you are strong and agile. However, it is wise to get the permission of the person or organization using the dumpster, as some items may be dangerous, messy or actually not junk. If you are not sure, ask, and always clean up after yourself so you (and others) may be allowed back.

Recycling centers are starting to take off in a big way. They can have everything from old blankets to tiles to various bits of hardware. The nice people there may also have resources that can help you with your quest to reuse stuff for your home.

Many communities have “free” days, where people are encouraged to drag out their useless sculptures, hideous purple sofas and three-legged desks and hope that someone else wants them. The cliche “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure” is a cliche for a reason, especially on these days where you can find dedicated fans of this practice cruising the suburbs at 4 AM in order to get the best “finds”.

The garage sale is still a traditional favorite for finding what you want and need on the cheap. Sometimes, if you see something you like that doesn’t have a price tag (like that lumber lying abandoned at the side of the house), make an offer. You may also find some deals if you chat up the people holding the sale – if one of them is involved in construction or home repair, they may have some valuable items they didn’t put out for perceived lack of interest.

Contact the local eco-people. You know, the ones who are constantly lobbying for cleaner water, better building practices and against dumping in ecological areas? Many of them would be thrilled to aid someone dedicated to reusing and recycling material instead of buying new. There are many eco-friendly options for the fixer-upper that your local green store may be able to hook you up with.

Never underestimate casual opportunity. If you see people demolishing a house or part of a house and it looks like they’re getting rid of stuff you want, offer to take it off their hands. You may be able to get it for free or for a much lower price than you would pay elsewhere – especially if you have cash on hand. It usually helps to have a good idea what the item you’re bargaining for costs on the open market.

Your local reclaim operation may have just what you’re looking for. Many of these operations exist solely on reclaimed wood and other materials, transforming it into flooring and other products and reselling it. If you’re looking for wood and can’t find it anywhere else, your last port of call is here, where they will sell you reclaimed wood (for a price).

With a little ingenuity, you can obtain useful materials with very little outlay of cash. Not to mention, patting yourself on the back for recycling.
