How To Reduce Ear Allergy Rash From Cheap Costume Jewelry Earrings

Common Earring Allergies

METAL ALLERGIES

Metal allergies are very common to most people who wear earrings, especially those with sensitive skin. Nickel and cobalt are among the most common problem makers, and they are found in just about all of the metal beads and findings in jewelry.

Copper and brass beads and findings often contain a very high concentration of cobalt and nickel.

Sterling silver is made up of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of other alloys, including copper and nickel. But be careful of many products you find that claim t be ‘sterling silver’.

Gold is probably the least allergenic of the metals beaders often use, but it also has some trace of copper or silver in it. The higher the karat number, the less the amount of alloys, but if you’re extremely allergic to metal, you might want to be wary of this one, too.

SO WHAT TO DO?

Some suggestions:

Try painting three or more coats of clear nail polish on your metal findings and beads to keep the metal away from your skin! Do a test run before you put too much effort into the project to make sure this will work. Also this needs to be reapplied regularly.

Gold can be worn by some with a mild allergy. But it should be 14K or higher.

Surgical Steel. The term “Surgical” steel does not mean anything. It can be a very low grade of steel which can/will contain reactive metals. If you are considering steel for piercings it should be of “implant grade”. The most common metal that meets implant grade standards is
316-lvm Stainless Steel. It must meet all requirements of ASTM-F138 to be considered implant grade.

Consider nonreactive metals:
Titanium is the safest metal available for sensitive skin, especially for anyone allergic to nickel or silver. It is used for surgical implants and earrings are the same medical grade. Allergic reactions to titanium are almost unheard of.

These earrings are available in polished titanium, which looks like silver or platinum and also in anodised colours. Anodising is an electrochemical process which causes the surface of the metal to change colour, there are no other materials added and there is no plating or painting.

Mexico’s Carnival, Fiesta Forever! It’s More Than Just Beads…

Celebrated the week prior to Ash Wednesday and normally lasting a little less than a week, Carnival in Mexico has a long tradition dating back to the nineteenth century. Coming from the Latin word Carnavale, meaning “goodbye to the flesh,” Carnival refers to the week before Lent (Cuaresma), where carefree abandonment and indulgence are encouraged.

Beauty Queens and Burning Moods, what else can you ask for?

Kick-off begins with the burning of El Mal Humor (Bad Mood), in which an effigy, usually modeled after an unpopular politician of the day, is hung and burned, followed by a flurry of confetti and fireworks. This gives commencement to nearly a week of festivities in some of Mexico’s most popular coastal cities, including Campeche, Mazatlan, Veracruz and Merida, just to name a few.

Host cities celebrate all sorts of parades daily, depending on the local carnival’s theme, which differs from region to region. Parades display an array of floats decoratively inspired by Mexican scenery and normally featuring bright flowers and live entertainment. Some parades require an entrance fee, and visitors are advised to get tickets to the parade as soon as they can through the local tourist office or hotel.

Mexpipe Challenge Surf Carnaval-February 16-20

For the first time ever, a surf carnival has been added this year at Zacatela beach in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. This festival with a laid-back Woodstock-like atmosphere will take place on the beach and will have D.J.S, a fashion show, electronic dance parties and break dancing competitions as well as plenty of surf in the Pacific Ocean.

Men and women can compete in surfing competitions as well as enjoy the many festivities offered in conjunction with the carnival. The Grand Carnival Parade takes place on Tuesday the 20th, followed by a costume contest and an awards ceremony at Town Hall.

Mazatlan– February 8-20

Mazatlan, home to the third-largest Carnival celebration in the world after those in New Orleans and Rio de Janeiro, attracts more than 400,000 people each year. From February 8 to 20, thrill-seekers fill the malecón (oceanside promenade) running along downtown’s Ollas Altas beach, singing and dancing along roving mariachi bands. You can also catch regional Sinaloenses bands with lots of brass, as well as rock groups that set up along the way.

Food lovers can enjoy open-air culinary festivals in the Zona Dorada (Golden Zone) and in Machado Plaza. Prominent dishes on hand include Mazatlán’s famous pescado zarandeado (barbecued fish), camarones con mango (mango shrimp) and marlín ahumado (smoked marlin). After enjoying some fresh seafood, Ollas Atlas port offers a unique offshore fireworks presentation February 17 representing a mock naval battle, in commemoration of Mazatlan’s 1864 victory over the French Navy.

Veracruz – February 13 – 21

Known for its Afro-Caribbean-influenced culture, the port city of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico hosts the second-largest Carnival in the country. Parade-goers can expect to see Draculas, drag queens and women in sparkling dresses dancing to the infectious Caribbean/Spanish rhythms along Miguel Avila Camacho Boulevard. Groups from neighboring villages dance in peacock and pheasant-feathered headdresses. A must during Carnival in Veracruz is dancing! Visitors should not miss the chance to dance at the zocalo, or central square. Salsa, cumbia, reggae and marimba are popular, but Jarochos (people from Veracruz) hold a special place in their hearts for the music and dance known as danzon, which first arrived from Cuba in 1880. For live music, visit the zocalo and/or the malecon on February 21, featuring Mexican artists.

And when they aren’t dancing, there’s nothing like sitting on the banks of the Jamapa River in the nearby town of Boca del Rio and enjoying succulent grilled huachinango (red snapper), or a vuelve a la vida (Veracruz-style seafood cocktail, a well-known hangover remedy) at bargain prices.

Cozumel – February 14-21

Known as one of the most popular celebrations in the Mexican Caribbean, Cozumel has commemorated this pre-Lenten celebration for nearly 100 years bringing Carnaval to life in an exciting explosion of color and music. Cozumel’s unique celebration includes a variety of costumed characters, such as Harlequins, rumba dancers, Spaniards, gypsy women, fairies, princesses, bullfighters and kings and queens that can be spotted during the week.

This carnival is also considered a family-friendly version of the holiday and begins with the crowning of the emperor and empress as well as the king and queen of Carnaval. As the week progresses and the momentum builds, the island’s celebration continues with colorful parades, nightly street fairs and daily musical performances and dancing throughout the streets of downtown San Miguel.

Merida– February 14-21

The Yucatan Peninsula’s capital city of Merida is one of the many cities that celebrate Carnival, with this year’s theme centered on “The Circus”. Since 1980, the people of the Yucatan celebrate the marching of “El Jacarandoso,” a popular character who was once king of the Carnival and annually displays the most colorful and amusing costume. On Monday during Carnival week, the ladies don hand-embroidered dresses and the gentlemen sparkling white guayaberas, the dress shirts typical of the region.

Other important carnival destinations in Mexico include Ensenada, Baja California; Guaymas, along the Sea of Cortez in Sonora; Tepic, Nayarit; and Chamula, Chiapas, said to be one of the most indigenous festivals in the country.

Fishing Equipment – The Tools Of Success

Having the right fishing equipment is an important thing to remember when your are contemplating your next fishing trip. You need to allow yourself the proper equipment to fall into the “mood” and get the optimal benefits of fishing. Getting the right tools will help you in different ways. As you know, the more equipment you have the easier fishing will be. One of the questions you need to ask is, do you have all that you need before you head out on your journey? To be successful you must ensure that your fishing trip starts with loading up the correct fishing equipment. There are many different types of equipment and it mostly depends on type of water you will be fishing in, what type of fish you are looking for and the style of fishing that you desire.

There are many different brands and styles of fishing reels that carry a range of affordability. If you are looking to enter into commercial fishing you will need to ensure that your fishing equipment is rated for that type of use. Commercial fishing requires more durable equipment. Since they have twice to three times the use they wear much faster. This makes it much more cost effective to spend the extra up front. There are a variety of products so that you can make a choice based on desires as well as what you can afford.

The type of fishing rod is another important part of the tackle that you will need. You may want to evaluate what type of rod that you need for your fishing expedition. Just as there are different reels there is a variety of fishing rods also. Base your decision on the type of fish that you want to catch. Another factor to consider is the type of water and conditions that you will be fishing in. Is the water rough, deep or shallow? This can make a tremendous difference. There are also different styles of rods for different types of fishing. Decide in advance if you are surf fishing, fly-fishing or any other method. It is also important to decide the sizes of the fish that you will be reeling in. If the rod is not sturdy or rated for that size of fish, your line will likely break leaving you hungry for the night! Speaking with a fishing pro or sales person can generally answer the questions that you may have about fishing products and what is right for you.

Do you have a pair of wader’s, a warmer vest or fishing vest coverall’s and how about bait kits? These are all-important tools needed for your fishing trip. Wader’s can keep you dry if you prefer the wading method of catching fish. A warmer vest can keep your head above the water and keep you toasty at the same time. Of course you need a good bait kit to have a variety of tasty treats for your fish friends.

All of these tools and fishing equipment perform different functions and are all necessary. Ensuring the appropriate tools can make the trip much more successful and enjoyable.

Native American Jewelry, the Perfect Gift Idea

This art form is one of the most beautiful of the native Indians of North America. Various pueblos have their own unique style of making jewelry. Sterling silver and turquoise are usually used in abundance. Men’s bolo ties, belt buckles and women’s necklaces, cuff style bracelets and earrings are the most common items made. The Navajo, Hopi and Zuni are the best pueblos, in my estimation, for high quality jewelry.

The Navajo people are adept at hand casting silver and creating petit-point jewelry. They also do wonderful inlaid work with turquoise and various other stones such as coral, jet and spiny oyster shell.

I am a big fan of turquoise so I usually enjoy the nugget type jewelry. I also love inlaid work. It takes many hours to complete a piece and when it’s done, you have a unique piece of wearable art. I have this thing for Zuni sunface’s. I even have two on my wedding ring! We have many available pieces on our website oneofakindthings.com I add new pieces weekly

The Zuni are renowned for their inlaid work, using turquoise, opals, spiny oyster shell, malachite, hematite, mother of pearl, jet, and coral usually. Each tiny piece is cut and placed by hand creating the image or scene desired. The various stones have a spiritual meaning as well. Turquoise, for example, is a stone representing good fortune and good luck. Called the lucky stone in many cultures.

The Hopi Indians are known for their sterling silver overlay work. Two pices of silver are layed over each other. The design is carved and etched deeply, creating a blackened design. Each piece tells a story in an intricately carved scene. I love Hopi jewelry for the symbols and story telling that each piece offers. I have many with the water symbol.

In all of these pueblos the talent and creativity is unbelievable, resulting in some of the most beautiful jewelry in the world.

Aboriginal Natives of the Red Lands

There are many native peoples spread across the globe, some very thinly. A couple examples I will give, however,  maintain a relatively healthy numbers of present  living members.

The peoples which now live on what we know as the Navajo Nation, who call themselves the Dine’, (Din-eh), originated from a land far colder and much farther to the north, in the north of Canada and Alaska. Ever since approximately the fifteenth century the Dine’ have shifted to the American Southwest. For over one hundred years the territory comprising their nation, which has slowly grown since establishment, has covered a large chunk of Arizona, along with a considerable section of New Mexico, and a respectable strip of extreme southeastern Utah.

What may they have in common with the Australian aboriginal inhabitants which are believed to have traveled from tropical East Asia? What quality makes their lives at least a little similar to the Native Americana that I had just mentioned?  The aboriginal groups “down under”,  who may call themselves Koori,  Anangu, or Wangkangurru  for example, depending on the area they reside in, are are understood to have come by boat form greener regions just as the Dine’. Unlike the dwellers of the Colorado Plateau in North America, the original Australians came from a much warmer climate, Tropical vs Boreal and Polar

Those are but only remote and trivial similarities, save for their mutual lengthy treks away from the original latitudes of their previous homes, and of course, the movements themselves from wetter extravagantly verdant landscapes to more arid climatic zones. Long before European sailors and settlers came, these people roamed the lands of their respective continents. They are both natives to the continent which they are to the present day calling “home”, but there is more to it than that.

To answer the former posed question, they both have for their homelands, a majestic colorful red rock landscape, unmatched in elegance and stature by few other places in the world. Also the natives, tragically, have in times past, and even today by some callous ignorant people, been considered “less than” those who later came to usurp them, by some irrational measure. The ones who took over their lands had aimed to confine them to set aside portions of land referred to as “reservations” or “reserves”.

Now days, plenty representatives of both societies live outside of these reserved lands, but often prefer the comfort of living within a community and culture that is more sympathetic to and understanding of that individual’s basic requirements, be it mental, physical, or spiritual. Navajoland and Arnhemland represent two such beautiful areas. Both are well known for producing beautiful unique art sold around the world. This is only one of many ways cultures like these to live on, by spreading knowledge of who they are and what they believe/perceive!

The globe is massive and wide variations are the general rule, yet small similarities between very far off locations of the globe can be pinpointed if sought out. These details are sometimes very obvious, but sometimes remain hidden, awaiting ties of similarity to be unearthed.  I thought it interesting to point them out to those that perhaps are little familiar with either of the two relevant great peoples of Australia and the American Southwest.

If one has the funds and the desire, I would recommend to go out and see what those peoples are all about, to absorb their cultures,  to understand their root motivations. Knowing more about different facets of varying human social communities could do nothing less than allow us to contemplate what must be known for all of humankind to comprehend one another and work alongside our fellow citizen of humanity toward a common beneficial goal!

I encourage all to read my pages and ponder the significance of the outdoors and the impact it has on our lives. Perhaps one day humankind will understand why we should not abandon hope of preserving it’s pristine nature!

Trip to shivalik hills of uttarakhand-India-asia

ALL ABOUT UTTARAKHAND.. It comprises the Shivalik range of hills adjacent to China and Nepal in the north and the foothills adjacent to Uttar Pradesh in the south.
Uttaranchal is the natural habitat of more than 4000 species of flowering plants and over 300 varieties of birds, many of which fall in the category of ‘endangered species’ today, because of hunting and increase in the traffic of trekkers and tourists.

MONAL PHEASANT (Lophophorus Imepijanus) is one such rare bird. About 12 to 1 12 ft.  tall, it has the body and head covered with lustrous peacock-blue fir, a canary-yellow feathered short tail and a peacock like crown, which give it a majestic appearance. Its natural habitat is at altitudes of 8,000-15,000 feet where it prefers to live inside bamboo and tiger-grass bushes instead of nesting. It lays eggs twice a year in snow, which hatch after 30 days. The Government of India imposed a ban on its hunting way back in 1972, but with little success.

Likewise, BRAHMAKAMAL, meaning Divine Lotus (Saussurea Obvalata) is a sacred flower growing above 10,000 feet, unlike Lotus, among hard rocks instead of ponds. It has large ethereal translucent white petals, shaped somewhat like a tulip, over a bright green stem. Local people, besides offering to deities, also use it to treat open wounds and bone fractures.

Conservation Efforts
The State Government of Uttaranchal has adopted MONAL as the ‘Bird of the State’ and BRAHMAKAMAL as the ‘Flower of the State’. Sanctuaries have been planned between the Tunganath Temple (12,000 ft) – Chandrasila (13,000 ft) region and the Mandal (5,000 ft) – Kharak (15,700 ft.) region for conserving MONAL.For the BRAHMAKAMAL, in addition to the ‘Valley of Flowers’ (12,000 ft.) which is its natural habitat today, efforts are planned to cultivate this rare flower in ‘Reserves’of selected vast meadows at altitudes of 2,000 – 6000 ft in Uttaranchal.

Breastfeeding a Baby with Tongue Tie

Breastfeeding is not always easy, it doesn’t come as naturally as some would assume. One example of something that can make breastfeeding difficult, is if baby has tongue tie.  This is not a well known problem.  Diagnosis is often missed, the mother assumes she is not breastfeeding correctly and will switch to formula.

A mother was experiencing excruciating pain when feeding her new baby during their first night together.  In the morning her midwife viewed her torn up nipples and suggested it was just a bad latch. But when the midwife held the baby, as she had first suspected baby had oral thrush, the she noticed the tongue tie immediately.  The baby was actually so severely tongue tied that he was unable to lick his lips or put his tongue over his gums.

The possible complications of snipping the tongue include bleeding, cutting the tongue/lip, needing blood products etc.

The mother then had to express breast milk inorder to feed her baby, while they waited for the tongue-tie to be snipped.  She was very keen to breastfeed her baby, and wanted to try it.  All that was required was sugar syrup (for anesthetic) and a pair of surgical scissors and baby was ready and waiting. Snip.

The mother said “No blood curdling screams, no gushing blood, no tears, nothing horrible I had imagined happened.  Except now my son could feed from me. No pain, no more blisters, cuts, grazes or blood… whoohoo!”

Sometimes gaining another professionals opinion is worth the hard work and pain for your baby.

Balloon Ghost: To make this fun Halloween decoration you will need a white balloon, scissors, white plastic grocery or garbage bags, tape, string and a black marker. Cut the plastic bags into strips leaving an uncut edge to hold the strips together. Blow up the balloon. Tape the cut up bags around the balloon to make the ghost’s body. Make sure the balloon is upside down when you tape the bags on so that you have something to hang the ghost from. Draw a face on the balloon to make the ghost’s head. Tie a string to the balloon and hang the ghost up.

Egg Carton Spider: For this craft project you will need an egg carton, googly eyes, scissors, pipe cleaners and crayons, markers, or colored pencils. Cut one section out of the egg carton. For more details www.greateducationonline.com Poke four holes in each side of the cup with scissors. Put a pipe cleaner into each of the holes and bend them to look like spider legs. Draw a face on the spider with crayons, markers, or colored pencils.

Pompom Spider: Supplies needed for this craft are yarn, scissors, pipe cleaners, cardboard, glue and googly eyes. Cut yarn into a 2 foot long piece and a yard long piece. Cut a piece of cardboard into a 3 inch by 2 inch rectangle. Loosely wrap the yard of yarn around the cardboard piece. Take the yarn off the cardboard, being careful to make sure the loops stay together. Put 4 pipe cleaners on the yarn loops. Tie the yarn loops and pipe cleaners together tightly with the 2 foot piece of yarn. Cut the loops in half to make a pompom shape. Bend the pipe cleaners in the shape of spider legs. Glue googly eyes onto the spider.

Pasta and Beans Skeleton: This craft project is made with a piece of black construction paper, glue, dried beans and several types of pasta (small shells, wagon wheels, ziti, elbow macaroni, salad macaroni, spaghetti, spirals, etc.). Lay out the pasta and beans in the shape of a skeleton. Elbow macaroni is good for ribs. Spaghetti can be used as toes and fingers. Small shells or small beans make good joints. Lima beans are perfect for hips. After you are satisfied with the layout of your skeleton, glue it down.

Ghost Necklace: For this craft project you will need Elmer’s glue, a small paper clip, googly eyes, wax paper and string. On wax paper, make a ghost shape out of your glue. Unbend the paper clip and reform it into a V. Stick the ends of the V into the glue at top of the ghost’s head. For more details www.greatindustrialguide.com Put googly eyes on the ghost’s head. After a few days, the glue will turn completely clear. Peel it off the wax paper and thread your string through the paper clip to turn it into a necklace.

Jack-o-lantern Pinata: Make a perfect Halloween party item by gathering a balloon, newspaper, flour, water, a bowl, a pot, a wooden spoon, scissors, orange craft paint, a paintbrush and a black marker. Make papier-mâché glue by mixing 1/2 cup of flour into 1/2 cup of water. Then stir the flour and water mix into 2 cups of boiling water. Simmer for a few minutes. Let it cool. Take newspaper and tear into 1 inch wide strips. Dip strips of paper in the glue and wrap around the balloon. Repeat process, covering the entire balloon. Let a layer dry and then add another layer. It dry completely, then pop the balloon, and remove it. Cut a small hole in the top to put in the candy. Decorate with the orange craft paint and black marker, making a jack-o-lantern face. Hang the pinata and have a party!
